Default Brake Sensor/Switch?

It has been difficult lately to depress the button on gear shift to put into gear, but can be done if I press hard using both hands. Recently, brake lights quit working, checked fuses and ok there.

I figured out that if in park and I press brake pedal as far as I can the gear shift button works fine and brake lights come on.

Obviously can't do this when driving so until I am completely stopped brake lights won't work.

Is there a sensor/switch? If so, where? And, most importantly, if I have to have replaced at a shop, any idea as to expense for part/labor?

ok, could be a couple of thing...the switch itself, or the spring could be bad...there is also whats called a shift/interlock switch under the shifter too....I dont sea any TSB's or recalls on this, one question? do you have small children or has anyone spilled any drinks (soda's esp) on the shifter?
