umm dude is full of it...my motive gears are quiet as hell in my 95gt....now in my 96gt i have frp gears...witch wine and i hate it...also the motive gears in my 95gt seem like they take more abuse...only because occasionally on my 96gt when i shift into gear i will hear a clunk sound from the rear end...im going to switch the frp's out in the 96 to motives...i personally like motives alot better...also if you did not know already motive makes frp gears now...and the frp's are a lower grade...the motives can handle more abuse!!!

No each time I had my buddy do them...he only charged me 150 to do them...pretty good deal and I just drank some beer w/ him...while he taught me how to do it...I bought the motive rebuild kit for my motives and bought the frp rebuild kit for the frp gears...now my motives are so quiet and the frp's whine...also tell your dude motive is hands down the best...there is a reason why they started making the gears for frp.

no...but if i was ya...i would just have a shop do it...call around 2marrow and see what kinda pricing you can get...you should pay any where from 200 to 350 to have this done...but just call some places and tell them what you wanna spend to have this done...most of them will go for the 250 dollar range...a chiltons and a haynes will give ya also instructions on how to do this...but it is pretty dif. to get them gears set-up and spaced right.

Your "buddy" is full of crap and must not know how to install gears. I have a set of Motive 3.55's in my '00GT. Had them for about a year now and they are as quiet as can be.
The key is setting the backlash and then the breakin. You'll need a dial indicator to set the backlash properly, although a set of feeler guages will work in a pinch(I wouldn't recommend that). If you get the backlash wrong, you will paddle the gears and it will whine like crazy. The only fix for that is a new set of gears.

I would take the gears set and the car somewhere else and have them done by someone who knows what they're doing.

Remember, it is almost impossible for anyone, myself included, to diagnose a problem over the internet without seeing the car. My advice is simply that, advice based on years of experience. I don't want you or anyone taking my word as gospel. I am trying to give some direction as to what I think may be happening.

Richard is right....you do not wanna do it your self...don't take it back from the shop if it whines at all...means they did not set the gears right...and if that happens like richard said...they will be buying you a new set...so make sure you take it to someone who specializes in that stuff.
