Question Engine stuttering bad

Okay, I tried everything elseI know that the Hanes manual said except one thing. So I let you guys try. So my engine starts to stutter real bad around the 2000-3100 RPM range. Most of the time it's only in 3rd gear. Sometimes it does it in all gears if going up a hill. During this time, it goes through a phase of not wanting to start . Like as in it would start up, then shut off immediately, unless I reved it immediately after start up. Well, I look in my manual, and it says the starting problem is either not enough fuel pressure, or ignition system problems. So two nights ago, I start cheking the coils and sure enough, I find a loose plug on the passenger side coil. Car fires right up. Well, as for the stuttering of the motor, I check my transmission fluid, it's fine. The tranny's rebuilt so I figured a burnt band or plate is out of the question. I put some Lucas in it before I checked the ignition that night. The car quit stuttering as bad, then eventually not at all. Now it has started back. I need help...

Sounds like worn out spark plugs/wires. If you haven't recently done so, change your oil, oil, air & fuel filter along with the plugs and wires.

Sounds good, I've never replaced the plug wires before... That's might be a good idea. The fuel filter probably needs to be changed... Everything else is in order... Cool! I check those right away! Thanks!

Yeah, you got it! One more thing, how many miles do you have on your current spark plugs? I always recommend that people change them along with the fuel filter once a year or every 12-14k miles to keep their engine running smooth. Keeping both of these components in proper working order will also prevent decreasing gas mileage.

I think my plugs might have at least 12K miles on them. I have Bosch Platinum 2s. Which do you recomend? I would like to have Iridiums.

I recommend Autolite copper core 764's for your mustang. Any platinum plugs, especially with 2 or more ground electrodes on them are a BAD choice for mustangs. Basic Autolite copper plugs with the single ground electrode gapped at 0.045 are the way to go.

cool, I assume that they're cheaper too. That means I can focus on a completely new ignition system from MSD

Default Coils

Swapping out the coils (or COPs) is not a bad job, you can do it. And stick with the Motorcraft parts, this is one of those areas where the aftermarket is suspect. And yes, they usually do this, one or two go bad, then a month later, a couple more...

Better to swap them all out, other than the new one, though I expect you can buy the set cheaper than 7 of them a la carte.

NOTE: We can give better advice if we know what year, model and mods you have on your car. Try www.rockauto.com for parts, they carry the 96 model's Motorcraft coils for about $80.
