Default K&N Oil fitler problems anyone?

I just changed my oil this weekend and went to the K&N oil filter. I have to say I am not impressed. The filter seems too big to fit on the mounting surface. I made certain to tighten it down sufficiantly and I noticed a little bit of oil on the filter. I assumed it might be from some of the oil residue that wasn't wiped up properly when I took my used oil filter off. I made note of this and cleaned up the K&N thoroughly and decided to keep an eye on it. Well I just got back from lunch and decided to take a peak under my car. Yep, that K&N filter is actually leaking just a smidget of oil. Anyone else have this problem?

Tonight I plan on tightening it down one more time and cleaning it again. It doesn't leak enough at the moment to leave a stain on the pavement but if it gets in my driveway I am going to be pissed. I want to keep my yard and driveway looking immaculant so I can win "yard of the month" next summer. I think stains in the driveway are massive eye-soars. Plus I'm concerned about my car.

I used the K&N Performance Gold Filters and I haven't had a problem with it. Also did you make sure the old rubber O-Ring wasn't left on the oil filter hook up? Also did you make sure to lubricate the new O-ring with new oil?

I had a 99 v6 stang before this car and I put a K&N oil filter on. Everything was ok until the next oil change. Took it to jiffylube and watched them try ot take it off. When they finally were able ot get it off the peice you screw the filter into came out with the filter itself. It took three hours and two different managers from other stores to finally get the peice out of the old filter and back on my car. I had properly greased it before putting it on, as well as tightening it properly; the filter was just not the right fit.
I have since used K&N for my GT. The last oil change I did I noticed a puddle of fresh oil under directly under the filter area. I thought it was due to me not tightening it enough so I went back under and tightened it some more; haven't noticed a leak since. Now that you mention your leaking situation I'm going to re check mine just ot be sure. Either way, this will probably be the last time I use K&N

Yes that is the filters part number.
Also yes to all your prior questions. I always add oil to the filter to pre-lubricate. Lube the gasket and always check to make sure the old gasket comes off. These are most likely not symptoms of the problems. I do believe the filter is oversized(the diameter of the mounting surface) for the 4.6 mod motors.

I am going to email K&N to see what they say, especially if Flyers has experienced similar problems.

From a functionality stand point they seem to be good filters. From a production standpoint they seem generically mass produced.

i have been using that filter for awhile now and have never had a problem changing them out....your only supposed to hand tighten it down which im sure your doing but thought i would say it . also never had a problem getting them off. it even has the deal on the end of it that socket will fit on to loosen it when its time to change it

I went back and checked on the 31st, still had a slight oil build up on the filter. I found the fluid was a little low(I always check everyday for a week after I do an oil change to make sure it's just right). After I topped off the fluid, I drove the car hard and she ran like a dream. No leaks since then. I haven't checked today yet, I'll wait till morning. Fluid level is still just right, it wasn't leaking bad enough to cause a low oil problem but the fact it leaked pissed me off(no stains in my driveway either).

my dipstick reads funny all the time, so I can never really go by that. I can say that I have not seen any leak on the pavement, even after running it hard, so If it is leaking still it is a very very small amount. I'm not going to worry about it now, but I will probably switch to a different filter next oil change.

I just saw royal purple now makes oil filters, anyone tried them yet?
