I put my car on the lift a week or 2 ago for my fog lights and chin spoiler and realized...THERE'S SIX CATS! Why are there so many and how do people manage to replace them with just 2 high flows and still pass emisisons?....dosen't make sense. !!!

I was told that there are 6 because the Mustangs were made to pass the California emissions laws. I'm assuming that California has the strictest emission laws? Anyways, the shop that did my mom's exhaust told me and my dad that there are only required to be 2 (1 on each side). When I bought my '02 GT, I realized that mine only had 2 left from when the previous owner replaced the cat-back

Reason: I'm an idiot
I believe it's for emissions and exhaust decibel levels as well.

but on my dads 95 GT there is only 4 and he never ever modifies... just wheels and tires are as far as ive got him.
maybe some specifically built for sale in tough emissions states got 6 and all the others got 4

yup, us in California get shafted by that
i still plan on getting high flow cats and an off road X-pipe
High flow cats are also constructed better so the operate more efficiently, but they cost more. Ford uses so many mostly to keep the exhaust noise down, they car has to appeal to as many buyers as possible and their "target demographic" is people that prefer a car that isn't too loud. (sure) The multi cat setup is also for redundancy so they can be certain every car can pass california's emissions laws, the strictest ones around. Earlier ones came with six, later came with 4, my 99 GT had 4 from the factory. The stock cats do a lot to keep it quiet but they hurt the performance.

That hunk of junk? Yeah, well I've made a few special modifications to that yellow 99 Gt, it makes the Kessel run in 12 parsecs and eats turbo japs and poops chevy's
yea i've realized theres 4 which is strange but it can be fixed.... Does anyone know how the emissions are in Pennsylvania because i was thinking of cutting 2 out however my buddy said the smog levels on these car might be really terrible....... i was wondering what i can do to free it up alittle but still be good when emissions come around.. Thanks
mustang have 4 total on v8,s ? the emissions are not even close to the emissions when your drivine it , these are mesured in parts per million, it can pass the 2 speed and the dyno tests but fail the emissions tests on a road test that is never tested on a used car, big G

i know they can't do that .. but it'd probably work !! LOL
