I think the 99-04 GT's look better, I personally just like that style a lot better. If you really think a GT wouldnt be an upgrade for a GTP, which in my opinion definatley is. Go with a Mach 1 or a Cobra. You can find Mach's for 15k area. And those are fast as hell.

dont get the o5, when i had intake exhaust on my 02 gt, i was beating 05's all day long. if you dont get a terminator, i say 2001 cobra or mach 1. save up and get what you want. dont settle, get what you really want. ive seen some terminators stock selling for 18k. just keep your eyes open for good deals.
im SURE its not a 600lb difference. in fact im pretty sure its less than half of that.
And USUALLY 05GTs beat 04GTs (stock vs stock) hands down
and imho 05GT looks better than 99-04. period. but just "having a cobra" would be cool lol.
Yeah, stock vs stock a '05+ will take a '04 if the drivers are equal. The S197 might even get a little bit better gas mileage. I can't say for sure, but my friend with a '04 GT struggles to get 20 mpg, while I get 23-25 (part of that could be different mixtures of highway and city driving though). But like I said, I'm biased

Alright. Well are there any problems with a 01 cobra mach and 05GT i should know about? how are the ergonomics vs the mach1 and a 05gt? I assume the mach 1 is the nicest since its top of the line.
im really starting to really crave a 01 cobra. imho the 03 cobra looks no better so its only advantage is more power which isnt worth the money to me.
If you do go with a Cobra stick w/ 2001. 1999 had a couple of issues and they have the weaker T45 while the 2001 gets the TR-3650.
Why do I keep seeing people on here saying stay away from 99 Cobras because they had "problems" or "issues". The deal was they engine wasn't putting out the claimed 320hp. Now unless the owner was completely uninformed or something, the recall has been done. I'd say probably 99% of 99 Cobras have the recall done. The recall entailed a new exhaust, intake work(extrude honed or acid dipped), and a retune. It's not like there were quality issues. My 99 Cobra has 86k miles which is low for a 99, and I've had no problems at all out of the t45. And besides, if it does go, it just gives me an excuse to drop a t56 in with 4:10's. I say you'll find more 99-01 Cobras in your range than you will Machs. Just because of the year difference. Now an 01 Cobra has the 00-04 interior with Cobra specific seats whereas the 99 Cobra has the 94-99 premuim leather interior. I didn't care because I'm pulling the seats for some Corbeau's. I love Machs, but the deal maker for me was that I found my Cobra for a steal and I love autocross, so the IRS was in my best interest. Just look for deals and take the one that jumps out at ya. With this economy you should be able to find some really good deals.

i have an 04, and when it was bone stock i never lost to an 05+ stang that was stock. I'm not bad mouthing the S197's though (as a matter of fact i wish i had one) But either i was lining up against bad drivers or i dunno

i think u r just a really good driver
But it looks like what im after is a cobra, since they cost less and have the IRS vs the mach 1. And since autotrader shows NO 99s near me (I think there were les 99s made than 01s, right?) I guess I'll be looking at 01s, but if I see a really good deal on a 99 I'll look into it. How many miles is ok on these cars? Since I'm gonna be keeping it a while and I don't know a whole lot about fixing up cars, should I just aim for very low miles cars? the 01 cobra vert that im looking at now has 40k, does that really matter vs others with 2x that? I only ask because my parents have that notion that everything starts breaking at 100k miles, and they are the types that think American cars are all crap and Toyotas are made by God and then tuned by Je$us.
wow that 01 cobra looks like quite the deal. from the pics looks like its in excellent condition and with 40,000 miles that is just reassuring. and figure if you're taking a hike to go see it you might be able to get 500-1000 off of that price too. nothing against the s197 but it does have over 70,000 on the clock.

Next summer looking to go with:
Bilstien shocks + struts, Lowering springs (brand still TBD (any suggestions?)), MM CC plates, front + rear sway bars, subframes, and upper and lower control arms.
Time to make the pony ride some rails
yeah since the cobra has 30k less miles it seems like a really good deal. 72k for a 05 seems REALLY high.
I just have to hope its still in stock in a few months. Basically the game plan is when I get back from traveling at the end of the summer I will immediately get a job and my dad will cosign a loan. so its still like 6 months away...
WAIT-Idea-I could get a job at the end of may when school lets out, But I will be gone 1 month this summer, so as long as in my first month working I could get enough to make 2 months of payments (full time btw) I could get it in may!
There is nothing wrong with a tastfully modded and not abused GT just my $.02
yeah but with the prices so close to machs, why bother?
and IRS and 4v in the cobra isnt something you will find too often in a modded stang, and its nice to have. Plus, this may be hard to believe, but I havent really seen any modded stangs for sale. And all the cars im looking at are 200-300miles away, I cant find ANYTHING good close by. There is a 02 GT vert for sale for like 9500 or so with 97k miles IN TOWN. Now if i could get it down to WAAY less, id think about it. But i think 2500 more for 57k less miles and a cobra (also a vert) is a much bettter deal. I will talk to them about the vert at the local dealership and maybe i could get it for way less. The same dealership was asking 12k for an accord that my parents talked them down to 7k last month, so maybe I could get it dirt cheap, if not though there is no way I'll get it.
This is the gt btw: http://www.bormanford.com/Preowned-I...oryId=26416323

S197's weigh as much as the old Lincoln Mark VII's.

well ill check it out, thanks for the link! If i could work a few hundred off the price, that would be a sick car for $8,000. If only I didn't think they were ugly, but I guess they aren't that bad. And that must have some serious power. I mean they are what 305hp stock? and full bolt ons and supercharger? must be over 400rwhp.
Ill call and see if its for sale still, but seeing how awesome it is I wont be surprised if it sold.( With that I would have the most powerful car in school, I think. #1 right now is a cammed out camaro SS LS1 with headers exhaust and i dont know what else.
