Your friend is not 100% wrong.
I think in your case, as long as you do a flush, change the filter and use new fluid you will be ok. Mercon V
What your friend is talking about is cars that have not had the
tranny fluid changed on a regular basis. ATF has detergents in the fluid, as the fluid gets old and breaks down, the detergent qualities of the fluid degrade, eventually to the point where it doesn't have any. On trannies that haven't had a regular fluid change, the parts are worn out, but the
tranny still works ok. When you change the fluid on one of those trannies, the new fluid and the detergents in the fluid will wash away all the material thats left on the clutches and work up old contaminents in the
tranny, and then it doesn't work so well anymore.
