I want to change my tuner Well, I should give a little history as to how I made a mistake when I bought my car. Not a bad mistake, just something I should have paid more detail to.
When I purchased my car I ordered the Hypertech Max Energy Tuner. The reason I went with Hypertech is because for the last three years I have been using their Power Programmer on my friends 95 Z28 every time he wanted the tune changed. I was extremely happy with the results at the time as he could notice major difference when driving the car. I was thoroughly impressed with what the power programmer was capable of!
Under the assumption the Max energy tuner was just the newer updated version for Mustangs, I ordered one from a non educated retailer(by non educated I mean just another guy working in a parts department).
Needless to say, with just a cold air intake, 180 thermo and 93 octane the only thing I have left to change on my Max energy tune is the gear ratio(if I swap gears) and tire specs. I'm very dissapointed.
So I've done a little research recently and I found the SCT LiveWire to be quiet intriguiging. The only major problem is coming up with nearly $600 to drop on a new tuner.
Aside that, I had a few concerns I wanted to share and get feedback on.
In my current situation I would take the Max Energy tune off my car and sell it on ebay. Then I would run the car on a stock tune until I can afford the LiveWire. This doesn't bother me as much as the fact I have been running 93 octane in my car for over a year(approx. 14xxx miles worth). I've read that stock, the 4.6 does pretty bad with 93 octane, so how bad will it be going to 87 for the stock tune and then back to 93 in the next year considering I have used 93 for over a year now? Going back to 93 octane doesn't scare me as much as downgrading to the 87 octane. If it's a potential problem would it be best to just save up the cash and order the LiveWire selling my Max Energy tuner afterwards?
Also, does anyone own a Livewire? To be honest, I don't want to buy a Tuner every other year to accomodate my car. Many local Mustang owners have told me to just get custom dyno tunes to make changes. I feel that can get rather expensive fast. I want to get the LiveWire and be done with it(aside a final dynotune when I have the car where I want it). I think a tuner should be something you buy to suit your needs and not look back on. I don't blame anyone but myself for not having researched the Max Energy tuner before, by all means it's a nice tuner. It just does not fit my future needs.
Best Regards,
