Mufflers themselves are straight. Why not just cut the muffler out and weld in a straight piece of pipe in its place? I don't see a reason to mess with the piece that goes over the axle. I trust your taking the pipe all the way out the back and not terminating under the car.

You realize how loud it's going to be, right? I hope you're not doing it "so it will sound cool"

You're not gonna gain a lot of hp from cutting out the mufflers, and its gonna be a ticket machine after, I hope you understand how loud it will be... I have an offroad midpipe, and my car is really loud, yours will be a lot louder than that. To do this right, you'll want to mark where you will cut, and measure the length before cutting, then take the mufflers to an exhaust shop and have them bend some tubing to replace it, you can get them to flange it so you can attach with clamps, that way if you change your mind you can put the mufflers back in. I really wouldn't recommend doing this to anyone, but that's the way I'd do it. And the car in the picture isn't a 96 mustang, that car in the pic has leaf springs, and a 96 mustang has coil springs.

There are is a mustang around me that has the mufflers removed and it is LOUD. I went with the Doug Thorley/Jardine 2 1/2" catback (stock in 96 is 2 1/4"). It has a nice mellow tone to it and I am not waking my neighbors when i come home from work at night, plus there was a differance is power after. This is the video of my exhaust.
