Default why does my 1997 GT have engine code x

this is reguarding my vehicle identification number the 8th digit which is the engine code is an x. When i looked it up in 1997 the engine codes were "4"=6 cylinder with 150hp, "W"=4.6l with 215hp, and "V"=4.6l cobra with 305hp. I di some more research and found that the "X" engine code started in 1999 and it was a 4.6l with 260hp. Can anyone tell me why my car has an "X" engine code two years before the "X" code was used? If anyone knows anything about this i would appreciate any information i can get!

my 1996 is a vin X 4.6 ltr. The carfax i ran on it showed it as the engine code for the car. Check your door sticker, maybe yours is a late 1996 production date.

i did some more digging and found that in fact my car is a "x" code 4.6l with 215hp! apparently the site i was using before had their info wrong. So my car is in fact a 97 gt 4.6l that has every option except that stripe in the lower of the car.

I thought mid to late production run 96's (and up) were dubbed X's. Mine is as well and I believe my is a May production run.

At any rate it's just the plain-jane factory 4.6
