Default Should I trade my 2002 Mustang GT for a 1999 Cobra?

I just wanted to get some opinions from you guys, if you think its a good trade. I have a basic understanding of the 1999 Cobra, and know that it did have some power rating issues. The cobra has about 40,000 miles on it and my GT has around 53,000. Thanks in advance for the responses

Welcome to AFM!

Hmmm... good question. Even the power-challenged 99's were cool Cobras but with some bolt ons (didn't say what you had) the stock 260hp on the 99-04's can be boosted quite a bit. Obviously there's more to a Cobra than just the DOHC 4.6 but if you're wanting just a hp increase I'd stick with the 04 and put money into it. You know the history of your GT and it is a newer car. You didn't elude to the deal you were getting on the trade and whatnot so it's hard to tell. If it were me and I was jonesing for a Snake I'd go for an 03 or 04.

Just my .02.

Keep us posted!

The power problem was corrected on all the 99's. The DOHC can take alot more abuse, and has some forged internals. It also has the IRS. If you're looking for a drag car I'd say stay with the GT, IRS's can be made to be drag friendly but not in stock form. I'd go for the 99 if it were me, but I'm bias, I own one already. And theres the stigma of having those cool little snakes on the fenders instead of GT. I initially was looking for an 03-04 GT vert till I found almost all were auto's. Once I found my 99 Cobra, it was all over.

You don't have to worry about the power issues. I know Ford did a recall or something to fix it. I think they put a little sticker or plate somewhere on the engine to tell if it was fixed. Most any owner (who buys a Cobra and doesn't want to go fast) would have taken the time to get it fixed.

no you should not. the only way you should trade a GT for a cobra, is if it's an 03-04. otherwise stick with what you got.

just my 2 cents.

What Snackmaster said about the Bolt ons is true so I wouldn't trade your GT for an older Cobra especially a 1999... If it was for an 03-04 Cobra then YES defiinetely go for it bro! Just think of it sensibly especially if it's a dealer because it doesnt make sense to me that they'd take a GT with higher miles than their cobra even if its newer.... Because dealers usually love to milk the "cobra" name for all its worth and really the cobra if you check carfax has been in a few accidents take it from me man my uncle owns a used car lot and he gets idiots all the time... And since your a stang owner your not an idiot but if carfax checks out clean than it up to you man!

Oh yea check out this Video of two new edge GTs racing a 99 cobra with exhaust work... mind you the two GTs only have like 3 or 4 bolt-ons... The cobra still beats em but not by much... YES i know the last GT the white one looks like an idiot but he has a like 1 or 2 more bolt ons than the other GT and he sticks with the cobra and beats it on a dead stop due to the Snake's IRS... LOL!! The camera car is the 1999 SVT Cobra!

Didn't you say though that the 1999 Cobra had the same interior as the SN-95 Mustangs as apposed to the new edge interior?

Huh? I didn't say anything about the interior in my post. But it does have the 94-98 interior, but if I was buying a car for the interior I'd buy a Caddy. Besides when the Recaros, and the seat delete goes in the only difference is slight in the center console.
And as far as a GT w/ bolt ons keeping up with a Cobra....... I don't buy it. My Cobra doesn't have much done to the engine, and I dyno at 301rwhp/300ftlbs. An 02 GT dynod the same day with tuner, exhaust, x pipe, udp, and a 100 shot. And he only dyno'd at 301/ 290something with the 100 shot. I respect both but there is so much more that can be done with a 4 valve, plus the powerband is much broader with a DOHC. You can make either one go as fast as your purse can bear. The Cobra is rarer and has 60 more hp right out of the box. Also there's no way anyone would trade a 03-04 Cobra straight up for an 02 GT. I think he's looking to trade straight up. I still think you'd be happier with the Cobra

Oh if he is looking to trade straight up then yea you're right no one will trade for an 03-04 Cobra for a 2002 GT...

Yes I agree with you also on that the cobras are rarer and have more hp theres no doubting that its just that you can make a GT able to keep tabs with an 99 +01 cobra although it takes money and in the video the GTs just kept up with the cobra the 1st GT lost and the second GT is probably extensively modded because I would say so by the way it looked Lol!
