Default 98 GT Exhaust Questions

Good Afternoon Guys and Ladies,

I'm new to allfordmustangs.com and also new to the Mustang world as I recently purchased a 98 Black on Black Mustang GT. Before owning this car I was never much into tinkering or playing mechanic, but owning a Mustang has quickly changed that. I'm now attempting to take things apart, research online and buying every manual I can find.

Now to my exhaust question. I've notice that the 98 GT has 6 catalytic converts (3 on each side). Not only do I think that this is highly restrictive the exit of fumes, but kills 60% of the sound. What are my options in this area.

1. Can I remove the section of pipe that holds the 3 cats on each side and bolt on a test pipe between inspections? Once insepction comes up, I would bolt the piece of pipe for each side with the 3 cats back on. Will the car be toooo loud if I do this? What would I do with the O2 sensors? Will this kill performance and milage with no back pressure?

2. Can I simply remove the last 2 on each side opening it up a bit?

3. If I want high flow cats would I have to buy 3 for each side totaling 6 which would break the bank?

I'm open to thoughts and suggestions. Thanks!

YOu could buy a new H or X pipe and just swap them when inspection time comes up.

Thanks for the response.

Would this make the car TOOOO loud? I don't want it to be ear piercing. Would it kill performance or would I lose tons too much back pressure? What would I do with the O2 sensors?

You can get good quality x pipes with cats. Or a good cat back system. I have a 95 gt with and off road x pipe and flow master 40s mufflers. It sounds good, it is a bit loud, but not too loud. There are so many options out there for you.
p.s welcome to the board.

There is nothing wrong with loud if it sounds good check out Mustang Parts & Performance - American Muscle They will have the solution for you. I have pypes x pipes with high flow cats sounds with flowmaster catbacks. Soon im going to be switching it up though and going with long tube headers and off road x pipes though
