Default exhaust 101 info

could someone explain to me some basics about exhaust.
what improvements to performance do an upgrade in headers or pipes or mufflers do versus changing all of them? what difference is there in xpipe and h-pipe? What is "cat-back" exhaust?

These may seem like dumb questions, but I'm a mustang lover with very little technical knowledge. Can someone educate me a little?
Thanks in advance.

More horse power basically by allowing your engine to get rid of exhaust faster.

X pipe is shaped like and X and has a raspier sound,

H pipe shaped like an H and has a deeper tone, much like older muscle cars.

Cat back reffers to the entire system from the CATALYTIC(CAT) converters(X oH pipe) back(BACK)
CAT(catalytic)(Back)

Catback Kits include pipes and mufflers, and tips.

For the s197 theres now Axle back, everything from the axle back.

Off road kits do not hace catalytic converters, illegal in ALL counties WITH emissions testing.

Catted kits come with catalytic converters which burn all excess gasses.

You have come to the right place, I have found everything I needed reading the opinions and suggestions within this site. The first thing you need to do is decide what sound you are looking for. I spent many hours browsing youtube for exhaust clips, this site has some uploaded sound clips as well MustangExhaust.com - Find the Perfect Rumble!.
I have a 2004 mustang gt, I just had my system put in this weekend. I went with MAC LTs, MAC Prochamber H-pype, and flowmaster force lls out the back. I wanted a nice low, deep rumble at idle and a sound of thunder when I hit the pedal and that is exactly what I have. As you will find, most will tell you that the X-pype will be more raspy (sort of like a nascar) and the H-pype will be more of an old school muscle car sound. This may vary depending on the 2V or 3V engine or maybe even the type of muffler you select so its time to start youtubing.

How loud do you want it and what tone do you want it at.

Ive got Magnaflow magnapacks(2.5in tubing, straighflow muffler, 3.5in tips) its a medium, almost loud sounds with a deep rich tone. And thats just with the stock headers and mid pipe. I havent found a need to updreade but I will get a new H pipe for the HP benefits and a deeper tone.
