I have a 1997 GT that has a V-8 3.8 motor with a 5sp tranny that has been wrecked. I found a body to change it all over to but am not sure about going from a v-6 to a v-8. Are there any issues that might come up? Have no idea really what I'm doing and any help would be great.
Your both right I mis-typed it when I posted this. Sorry!! But yes I will be changing the entire engine block and possibily the tranny too. I was told that to go from a V-6 to a V-8 I would need to change the rear end because the gears would be different. Is this true?
not because the gears are different, but because of the power. the v8 rear end is 8.8 inches and would probably rip through the v6 rear end (not sure of the exact size. maybe 7 inches?) with ease. you will also have to get the k member from the v8 and upgrading to the v8 suspension would probably be a good idea too.

Next summer looking to go with:
Bilstien shocks + struts, Lowering springs (brand still TBD (any suggestions?)), MM CC plates, front + rear sway bars, subframes, and upper and lower control arms.
Time to make the pony ride some rails
i dont know if the V8 and V6 clutches are the same but that might be something to consider

A gt rear end is a 8.8 a v6 is a 7.5'' non lsd for the swap you will need a 8.8 rear endd with lsd diff

I drove mine with the 7.5 open diff for about a year. The only thing is, youll have power up front, but youll never transfer it on the floor with an open diff. Sure you could get a differential and gear for your 7.5 and it would tough enough, unless you plan on going 320 hp and increase your torque a lot, but your better off swapping an 8.8 rear end, they come ready to rock and its a very easy swap. As far as tranny goes, the t-5 from your v6, doesnt have the shift ratios to take advantage of your engine and will have a much hard time lasting than the 7.5 rear end. Trust me on that. Get your engine with the tranny still attached, if not screw it. 4.6 engines can be found anywhere for cheap without the trannies. Might aswell just buy one off a crown vic or a truck if your gonna keep stock tranny.
a v6 swap to a v8 is USUALLY pretty expensive unless u know how to do all the fabrications and stuff thats necessary.... i know for a fact that the 4.6 cars are really stuffed in there pretty good so trying to take a v6 to v8 is gonna be tough... BUT STILL POSSIBLE... i drive a 98 v6 for my DD and i have a 98GT (4.6 car) for my toy... get a 4.6 and a transmission either a T45 if u wanna go standard, or an AOD-E if u wanna go auto...ur choice ummm you CAN drive on the 7.5 for a LITTLE bit like fender mentioned, but DONT BEAT IT they are a very soft squishy rear and dont have much to take abuse... i put an 8.8 in my commuter car cuz they are a dime a dozen, and trust me, its a direct bolt in, INCLUDING ALL BRAKE ACCESSORIES the hardest part is gettin the old rotted bolts out of the bushings... took me about 3 hrs lol mine were BAD.... anyway driveshaft will line up no need for change you MIGHT need a different K-member for the 4.6 to set in place too but im not entirely sure about that... also ur guages are different so u prolly need some GT guages too cuz ur stock tach/speedo will prolly be significantly off... i dont think there are anymore differences but food for thought, a v6 automatic is the same as the v8 automatic for multiple years... a standard isnt necessarily better cuz all ur friends say so lol its just driver preference stock tranny for stock tranny... but dollar for dollar spent ur best off just buying a v8 car... unless of course u wanna be different pay less money for insurance and have the opportunity to talk about how u swapped out ur v6 for ur v8 like fender can i dont discourage this idea AT ALL, but read my signature and u will understand exactly how to make a v6 to a v8 swap worth it... good luck and i hope ur happy with what u decide

i got my 97 for sale with all the mods in my signature and a few extra parts for $5500 if you want to sell all and switch pm me if intersted....
i've talked to a few friends wanting to do the v6 to v8 swap and they all said it was very extensive. it is more worth it to start over with a gt, if you compare bang for your buck, and saves a ton of time, lol
