First question... How many miles on your car? It may be that your clutch discs in your posi are worn out. Second question was it a first gear burn out. If so you might not have acheived enough wheel speed for the cluthes to grab, try shifting into second on your next attempt. If it still only burns one then your posi might be shot.

Sounds like your traction lock is in need of a rebuild. The clutches go after a while. I'm looking at getting mine rebuilt this winter.

Yup, sounds like the traction lock is done, probably time for a rebuild or upgrade.

It has 115,000 miles on it. I dont do it all the time. Ive done it 3 times in the year and few months ive had it. The first time was about a year ago and they both broke. The time before last i didnt think anything of it and this time got me worried. How do i check to see if my clutches are bad?

If you spend the effort to see if they're bad, you might as well replace them, along with the S spring. You have to take the rear brakes off, rear diff cover off, diff pin out, slide the axles out, and knock the S spring out, then the clutches are right there. Not a hard job, just make sure you get the new ones in the right order, and soaking them in the friction modifier overnight never hurts either.

Just don't open the the friction modifier in the house, or noone will want to be in the house for about a week.

GOOD CALL, especially on opening the modifier inside, that stuff smells like rotten arse.

It's about a 4 hour job in the driveway, I'd say.

The S spring is the spring that goes in the middle of the spider gears that pushes out on them against the clutches. It usually comes with the rebuild kit.

The Kit:

Traction-Lok 8.8 Rebuild Kit - '79-'09 Ford Mustang

Get the S Spring, also called the preload spring from any dealer, but get one for an F150, they are heavier than the Mustang ones.
