Thanks...

I discovered the cause of my P0455 code (Large vacuum leak in the EVAP system). The fuel neck was rusted and leaking. The dealer wanted $435 (165 part 250 labor). I pull'd a neck off a 2001 GT (somebody let their stang get away and crushed the front!) for $15 (in great condition) at my local junk yard. The neck wouldn't come out until I completely drop'd the tank, and it wa sdifficult to pull out of the tank. I purchased a new seal ($25) from a dealer.

The removal was difficult enough that I decided to epoxy the neck and R&R in the spring! If anybody has an install method please provide.

you may have overpaid...clean is clean, high miles cannot be reversed..the engine or tranny could go at anytime, I've seen supercharged cobras on Ebay go for $6500..fyi when you drop the gas tank the fuel filler neck will come with it, that is the the time/way to replace the grommet, it is very common repair when upgrading your fuel pump as they are always dry rotted after time

I would think a $6500 Cobra (Convertible like my car?) would be beat to S@#%. Time will tell if my decision was good, but today I'm very very satisfied!

Thanks for the neck tip...I figured what I experienced at the junk yard was real.

Replaced the plugs and the low speed 35 mph) miss seems to have gone away.

I had someone ding me (this forum) for buying this car for $4500. I'd like to believe I thought my decision out. Here's my rational:

1. 1 owner car
2. outside well taken care with top in mint shape - garage kept?
3. interior is pristine (rub mark on floor mat where right foot rested durring cruise)/
4. underside was clean, exhaust in good shape
5. good brakes and tires
edmunds retail with 193K - $7200
6. All the options
7. wasn't looking for a collector car
8. Didn't want to spend much ($2500 out of pocket with trade of 1994 cutlass convertible that most places didn't want to trade for and I didn't want to sell myself).
9. Carfax was clean - no accidents reported - I've found no evidence of damage.
10. Didn't think I would be refused membership into a stang club because of the mileage

I think loser may have been the person who sold it - dealer beat them up over mileage. I know the dealer tried to sell it for 3 months and decide to wholesale it to corner lot I purchased it from. Has 1 month warranty for whatever it's worth.

Do you think my logic is bad?????

Sure was nice cruising today with the top down and being able to hear that throaty mustang sound!

dude. dont pay attention to anyone who says you got screwed or paid too much or something. the car looks amazing. i once had an 01 silverado i paid 3800 for that had 220k miles that looked far less pretty than your car. be happy with it as she is a beaut and im sure youll make her last forever. if you do the preventative, and fix the unforseen, youll be golden. good job on that buy

I brought this car with my eyes wide open...

What we need is a healthy discussion on how to evaluate a used/ high mileage car. Look at the radio buttons on this car. Either the radio was replaced or the driver hardly touched it.

I would tell anybody looking at an older stang to check the fuel fill neck. You're looking at a $450 repair (dealer) if you can't do your own repairs. I mention in an earlier thread my stang had a rusted out neck that cost me $40 bucks to replace (my labor and a $15 neck from a junk yard versus $165 from ford).

Had I known about this issue I would have had additional deal making items!

This is a fun thread. I enjot hearing others view point and lively discussion.

for sure. definitely a lively one!

we should have a thread on evaluating a used high mileage car. that would be good. and u know whats funny, thats specifically looked at to really get an accurate gauge of how clean and new the inside is, looking at the radio buttons haha. its good stuff

WOW man, nice pics!!! she looks really really clean just like u said... good point about the floor mat AND the radio both are very good ways of inspecting the type of driver she was... ur previous owner prolly just had one radio station and prolly paid attention when she was driving instead of resting her hand on the radio stations all the time.... i think you lucked out in this deal!! see, ur car may have high miles but lemme tell ya, i WISH i could afford to buy a nice stang that some idiot didnt try hacking and butchering his way to making it "cool"
but really u only over-paid JUST CAUSE its at a dealership...if it were a private seller, ur car prolly woulda been like 1500 bucks less total bill... BUT u did manage to get rid of a cutlass u prolly didnt like nowhere NEAR as much as your mustang... and its not like u paid 6500 for a v6 mustang in that era, in which i see around here ALL THE TIME... not to say a v6 mustang is bad, but its no 4.6 mustang AND you even got PI heads u lucky S)(*U%$* lmao
considering the age of the vehicle and the amount of miles, there is NO WAY that thats just around town driving...that car musta been a commuter car all year round.. AND if she was goin on vacation, u think she was gonna take a rental hahaha??? no way!! the stang is MUCH better!!! so it was all pretty steady maybe around 2k rpms cruising...
this DOES limit you to the abuse u can give the thing but it dont hurt to clean out the carbon every now and again either... revving that motor at 6000rpm prolly aint the best idea, but, it could also be fun and it could use it maybe like once a week or so... give ur buddies a good smoke show every now and again and other than that just enjoy the dam thing ya know...
to me, you did good, not great but good, buying that car... i wish i had a PI motor with a car as clean as that one... or one that some idiot didnt try putting a big stereo in and must have grounded out the remote wire on something cuz little blue insulation is melted down my carpet all the way to the back of my car i HATE idiots that screw up these cars... so all in all, in my book, you did AWESOME

Bottom line if you like it and feel you got a deal that's all that matters, also it's a testimony to Ford quality that the car is still in great shape...my 96 cobra with 150K miles still runs like new (better actually with all the mods I've done), so keep smiling and enjoy your new ride.

Ok..getting a car tagged in MD is horrible!

One time inspection required and shops prey on older cars. Coming to MD 2 years ago and transferring 3 cars was $1000 - My 2002 explorer was estimated at $2800 in repairs - said I needed a new rack and pinion system plus other $#!t- next shop got me for $250 for front brakes that the $2800 shop never listed as problem!

So I take the mustang and guess what! Over $1200 in repairs
They are telling me I need:
1. new or cleared front HD lenses
2. front rotors
3. mufflers
Blah, blah, blah

Hate this one time inspection ; forces the shops to hit a home run first time around!

OK - I know the next shop will not be the same! I bet a whole lot less, but of all the things the front lights concern me the most. Can I clear them myself or should I just search for clear junk yard parts or ebay???
