High Mileage Mustang

Just purchased a 2000 GT vert with 193000 miles. Car is very, very clean, top is in excellent shape, and the engine/trans runs strong (zero smoke on start and no warnings). I wanted a 5 speed but that didn't work out. I paid $2500 (4500 - 2000 trade) for it with the trade of my 1994 cutlass vert with the 3.4 engine. I spent the last year fixing up the cutlass and it is sharp, but I wanted rear wheel drive. I'm very happy with the mustang .

What should I do next? Thinking about taking it to Ford for a full going over. I did notice that at low RPM I get a hesitation/bucking that clears as soon as I apply more pedal. I've put 200 miles on the car so far.

PS.

One owner car (women) and I'm trying to reach the owner to get repair history. And, thank her for the excellent condition the car was kept in!

be forewarned that the woman driver might not be good. did she baby the car? if the car was babied for 193,000 miles, it may run fine now, but if you start to drive the car hard like a lot of us do then you will actually clean out some carbon in the motor and you may start it hear knocks and noises that were not there before.

its like the dealerships favorite statement: "One owner! little old lady!"

Point taken...the carfax provie the ownership info. I don't care if I need to rebuild the engine/trans because the car is so clean!

if you can do your own work, or trust someone to do it, i would recommend replacing your spark plugs (check coil boots while you're in there), and check and clean emissions valves, IAC, change air filter, change ALL fluids, run some zmax through it, tire pressure (got any vibrations or pulling?)... and use that for a starting point, this is what i do with all of the vehicles that i get, so that way i know that everything will be fresh....

Do you think I over paid? I've been looking for a few months, checking cars and prices. Cars I've looked at with less than 80,000 miles didn't look as good as this car. I've had several people look at it and they were amazed at how good it looks. This car is clean top, bottom, and inside!

if the woman was just about ANYTHING like any of us... the car would be in the same great shape... we even have a classifieds on the forum it was a great deal when u said it was only 2500 bucks... until u said there was a trade in... i have seen some 2000+ GTs around here for like 5000-6000 with only like 130k MAX on them...

EITHER WAY! thats not the point here... you bought the car it sounds your happy and you will CONTINUE to be happy with it... if it aint tickin or knockin and the castings on ur pistons made it past 100k, YOU GOT A GOOD ONE... the high miles dont mean its bad, but a LOT of moving part especially rubber bushings will probably need replacing soon, if not like NOW lol... someone made a good call above about vibration at highway speeds, make sure ur front end is nice and tight... if ur car is runnin fine, doesnt stall out, tranny dont slip, bla bla bla... then DONT WORRY ABOUT UR DRIVETRAIN... ANY car out there that ppl actually took care of, didnt beat the living snot out of it and did periodic maitenence that was necessary, you would be AMAZED how many miles u can squeeze on it... AND the car being THAT new, with that high of miles, there is a sure fire chance that MOST of them are highway... could have been her vacation car, AND commuter to work... highway miles arent bad, they have consistent wear and oil pressure at a steady 2000rpms sooo ya i think u got a good one well taken care of by the sounds of it... just make sure its SAFE to drive, play with it a little bit, beat on it a tad, *as mentioned, get the carbon out* and just enjoy ur new ride...

oh and last thing... WELCOME TO THE FORUMS, stick around for any needs or questions u may have... but read the stickies, they are there for a reason!!

Thanks...I look forward to joining a mustang club and just having fun with it. It's a fun car, not a daily driver!

OK....I feel good about the price when compared to the condition of the car the mileage (193,000) being what it is.

I'm going to Ford to get the car looked over. I spoke with a service manager and he didn't think a compression check of the engine was needed because the computer would code a low compression (resulting effects) cylinder. This is the case with the trans or any other concern I may have regarding the high mileage. So Saturday is a feel good checkup unless someone suggest specifics I should ask about.

I'm trying to get in contact with the previous owner to get the history on this car. If this happens great, but if not here's my plan, please give me your experienced ideas.

Winter Mods:

1. Street Shift kit and B&M shifter (wanted a 5sp...and don't like the OEM shifter!)

2. 373 gears

3. Flowmaster mufflers (stay with stock exhaust)

4. Performance pulleys

Run it hard (Sunday cruise ) in the spring and see how it holds up for a few months and go from there.

The only issue I noticed is the low speed hesitation that feels like a shutter and clears when I apply more trottle. The Ford service manager says without a code it may be hard to correct this condition.

well ur ford service manager is prolly the same guy that would tell you to plug the scanner in to find codes on ur manual tranny malfunctioning...

if u read the posts above closely...you will see that they said to make sure ur compression ratio in each cylinder is the SAME, nobody said it necessarily had to be LOW on compression

however ur mod list looks good, but u may wanna rethink the gears for the winter time, it may be easier to drive in the snow with a higher gear, get USED to the 3.73s in spring but i agree that gears SHOULD be number 1 on ur list usually

Just drove the car tonight and got a check engine light. Codes say 1. EVAP broke or leaking, or not connected
2. Purge or vent solenoid defective
3. Vacuum leak at engine

What is my trouble shooting options for these conditions?

I will get a compression check this weekend!

Driving the car I hear no unusual sounds and the suspension feels tight and responsive.

This car came with a Viper remote start which I just figured out how to work. But, the Viper system doesn't have an alarm. My question - Does the 2000 Stang's thef system include an audible alarm (active) or is just a kill switch system (passive?)? I will need an alarm and I'm thinking of getting an updated viper system installed (quoted $450) which will start, open, and alarm. Any thoughts...

i think, if anything u should find out how to REMOVE the remote start, as they are just one big headache under the dash and a real mess if ever anything fails... and maybe even possibly destroying ignition system components.... prolly low chances of this, but knowin my luck, ya NFG

as far as ur vacuum leak is concerned the best u can do is inspect the car while its runnin, look for a crack or something, LISTEN for a small whistle, and put ur hand over anything that may seem to you like a leak and if it sucks ur finger on it very slightly, then theres ur leak
but it COULD also be manifold gasket and or the infamous 4.6 plastic intake crack

Doesn't sound too bad pricewise. if it's stick 3.73's should be nice 4.10's if auto imo. But 1994 said, get used to them in the winter because it'll be different. Also a flowmaster muffler with stock exhaust may be a little too quiet for my likings. All in all, good deal

Everyone that sees my vert can't believe it has 193K on it. I just hope the inside is as good as the outside!

I'll know alot more tomorrow after I get it look'd over.

Look forward to the great comments - I can see that this car and my wife will not get along
