Default fuel economy possiblilities??

ok so i got my 98GT registered just yesterday WOOT WOOT im soooo happy... anyway... and everytime i get a new car for the first few months i calculate fuel economy...
...here is my method of calculation: go to gas station fill tank.... hit tripometer, drive for at LEAST 100 miles or when the fuel guage drops to about a half a tank whichever is first *depending on vehicle* go back to the SAME gas station, fill car back up til the pump shuts off again (this way your not relying on the gas guage lol) read the amount of fuel on the pump consumed in the trip of full tank to full tank I.E. 2.860gallons... this scientific evaluation MUAHAHA results in a hypothesis like no other lmao!! in all seriousness, this method MUST BE 100% accurate cuz there is no way to have altering variables other than the person behind the wheel and the type of alloy in the right foot HAHAHA

sooo say you went 100 miles and burned 2.860 gallons... so miles/gallons=MpG no?

so in this case your car and you would get 28.6miles per gallon...

so i did my calculations, i dont remember my exact numbers but it came out to be 30mpg combined highway and around town with MINIMAL hammering but still had a couple broadside shows for the family

so, i was wondering is it truly possible that i coulda gotten 30mpg or is there something def. wrong here??

i have NOTHING in my car cept me (as far as weight is concerned)
radio,motor,trans,interior you name it, its stock... (as far as i know anyway) i have short throw, steeda quadrant kit, king cobra clutch, 3.73s, torsen rear diff for dam near posi all the time, fiberglass hood, and fiberglass rear spoiler... that about all i can think of that would affect my mpg rating... i drove like 50 miles highway and 50 miles round town and stuff but i use 4th gear to cruise at 30mph cuz im still at like 1500rpm in 4th lol at 30mph

80mph=about 2700rpm
65mph=about 2500rpm
i drove about 70-75 on the highway... and mostly 30-45mph around town

30 MPG is not underheard of but thats a little more then others are getting in their near stock motors. You don't have a CAI do you?

i thought it was but now im unsure lol it has a K&N filtercharged sticker on it and pulls air from the fenderwell thru a hole about the size of an apple... but i pulled out my filter the other day and much to my dismay it was a plain jane fram filter... sooo im guessing my air box is stock with a fram filter and a K*N sticker hahaha
but would a CAI increase or decrease MPG??

a CAI will increase gas mileage...I've gotten 29.8 mpg highway with my 5.0 ...so i guess its possible for regular drive

Don't think K&N has fender mounted CAI's but from your statements it doesn't sound like the standard.

I managed 30 MPG once... All highway driving :P Never could repeat that tho

Oh, and yes, I'm keeping tabs on my fuel economy ever since I got the car. Every gas stop gets me the trip mileage, and the amount of gas going in

Assuming your speedometer/odometer are correct...

This is how I do it...

Go to the gas station, fill it up to the top where it stays at the top of the fill tube and doesn't bubble down. Reset trip counter odometer, Drive for a tank, then fill up at the same gas station pump and fill to the top of the fill tube again.

Take the miles on the odometer and divide by the gallons of fuel it took to fill back to the top of the fill tube.

With my blower, 373 gears, T56 and 119,000 miles I recently got 25.5 mpg on a trip to PA using mostly cruise and interstate only driving.

Use the fill up method because depending on the amount of pumps running at the station, the auto cut off can shut down at different pressures or splashback can shutdown the pump. If the gas is up to the filler neck, you KNOW the tank is full.

well i figure when i click it enough times and it keeps stopping the closest gallon or dollar amount is close enough for an accurate reading.. the 30mpg COULD be off by say 1 mpg due to not know if tank is 110% full (just cuz im a lil concerned about seeing the gas in my filler neck...i have quite literally been blown up before by a bronco...have hospital pics to prove it fireball was HUGE from the gas....) but i just didnt imagine even say 29mpg in a v8 mustang that i DID beat on a little bit?? *shrugs* who knows maybe all my mixtures are runnin right and my o2 sensor is just dumb lol
