Default 1996 Cobra questions

Hey guys,
I'm never usually in the 4.6 section since I know very little about them. But I have a quick, easy question...

I know the '96 and '97 GT's had problems with the heads not breathing so well. My question is, do the '96-'97 Cobras have the same problems?

My friend is looking at buying a GT or Cobra, and I keep telling him to either get a '98 or later GT/Cobra or a '95-earlier 5.0. But he found a '96 Cobra for a pretty good deal.

The heads for those years flow pretty good and way better than a GT. I know on some, the IMRC plates would open either to late or too early. My friend had his dyno tuned and they fixed it in the tune. Gave him a few more ponies to the wheels.
The Cobra has way more potential than the 96-98 GT's

hey feen, good to cya in this side of the world lol not sure about the cobras, but ur right the 96 to 98 cars did NOT have PI heads... so he would need 99 or newer GT for PI heads... the head swap is actually really easy too and only a couple hundred bucks so when u price a 99 and u price a 98, and the 98 is like 2000 cheaper just cuz its the older body style what are u gonna do with the 1000 bucks worst case scenario from not buying the 99 hahaha thats just IMO
im still not sure about the cobra tho, as i do not have one lol good question

Cool, thanks for the reply fellas!
Yeah, I have just heard of the '96-'97 GT heads not flowing very well. And I am ASSUMING that the '96-'97 Cobra has the same heads???

according to 2005GT, the heads DO flow better but he did not say whether or not they were the teardrop shaped ports of a PI head....

NO! the cobra has MUCH better flowing 4valve quad cam heads. There is no comparison. Post in the Cobra section and you will see what I mean.

The '96 Cobra is by far the best choice. It's got more out of the box potential than an SN95 5.0 or a 96-98 GT. Snatch it up if the price is right.

+1, the 96-98 GT heads are the not so great, tear drop shape ports. Those are 2V heads. The 99-04 GT's are 2V and have the better flowing squarish ports, PI heads, that people put on the 96-98 GT's for more power. The 96 and up Cobra's came with 4V heads. The 96-98 Cobra's were pretty good, 99/01 flow better and the 03-04 Cobra heads flow even better.
