Unhappy 2001 Transmission Handle - Brake Fluid????

This disabled guy has problems. My mustang will not let me move the transmission handle (holding the left button in) - As if it is locked in park. The friend who borrows my car all the time said - Oh that happens all the time when I drive your car. I just pump the brake and that allows me to change from Park To Drive/Reverse,etc.

Now after being pissed off that - I was not told about this & they did not take care of it, etc. I am trying to figure out what the problem is.

I can't reach my owner's manual and a wild guess would be brake fluid? If so is that something I can pop the hood and just pour in?

Appreciate any input as I cannot afford to take it to a garage to have it checked right now.

Best regards,

Wildwilly

Of course you know you can't move the shifter in or out of park unless your foot is on the brake pedal, so I won't mention that.

I think a 2001 is old enough to still have a hard wired brake light button switch on the brake pedal. The problem is probably the switch. It detects whether the brake is depressed or not. See if you can find a plunger type switch up at the top of your brake pedal arm, and check to see if it is mounted securely and adjusted so the brake lights come on just as the pedal starts moving.

Check also to see if your brake lights are coming on, they may or may not be working, or they may work sometimes.
