Default What do you think of this '99 Cobra?

I did already post a thread like this in the Cobra section, but after thinking, my questions apply more directly to 99-04s in general.

My friend has been looking for a used Mustang and a few weeks ago we came across this 1999 Ford Mustang SVT listed for $10,300. It has 73,400 miles. We went and looked at it today & it looks great. I did look up the VIN & of course, one needs to buy the CarFax. If someone could get it for me (i.e. if you have the unlimited VINs for a month), I'd be very appreciative!

As far as I could tell, the car looks sound. Obviously it's a 10 year old car so some stuff needs to be fixed. The tint was applied on the rear window on the outside of the glass ( Lol), the Cobras on the seats look like crap, and it needs some touch up work done. It's bone stock besides the 18" Chrome Saleen rims, Saleen spoiler, BBK intake, and black headlights.

My questions are... What should he check for before he buys it? Obviously he'll get the CarFax if no one on here can get it. My soul is sold to Mustangs, so it's very hard for me to point out things that are bad.

I couldn't tell if it had a short throw. If you could describe shifting a Cobra in a few words, how would you? I didn't drive it, but I was in the pass. seat. It apparently was very "tight". Would a Cobra benefit from, say a Steeda short throw shifter?

He had a DVD moniter/stereo and 2 12" subs in the back. It sounded crazy as hell haha! The dude said he'd come down $1000 if he could take the subs & stereo out. How much weight do you think those add? Would he be better off taking the subs & stereo out & getting new stuff?

Overall the car seemed to be in great shape & ran perfect (for a 10 year old car). He said the basic tune up needs to happen soon (i.e. filters, oils, plugs, etc), but other than that the car is fine. The price isn't too good to be true, but it is under KBB. He says he is only the 2nd owner & has had it since '06. We'll see what the CarFax reveals.

The VIN # is: 1FAFP47V4XF154321

Thanks a lot guys for helping out the Adopt-a-Cobra Organization!

I would walk away from it, half ass tint on the rear and who knows what else is done half ass. The right one will come along, your friend just has to be patient. When I'm looking I might look at 30 or 40 before the right one comes along. Take your time, there are plenty of low mileage Mustangs out there, Mike. SCT Tuner.

You know, that is a good point. It's just everything looked & felt good about it. It was a short test drive though.
But $9k for a COBRA seems like a great deal??

Thanks for your input guys!

That's what I'm thinking. If the VIN is clear & a mechanic thinks its sound, this seems like an amazing deal. The engine is definitely the Cobra's and the VIN numbers are matching & show to be a '99 Cobra.

The 99's have the Teksid block (01-02 have WAP = weaker), and my friend wants to supercharge/turbo it.

I'm now thinking he should let this guy take the subs & HU so he can save some $$$$ and put his own stuff in there.

OH NOEZ! The window tint is bad! You can't buy it now!

POST 1900!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah get the subs and stereo out of there. with $1000 you could get a pretty nice midpipe/catback that would sound better than any stereo you could imagine.

but yes i would have to say bring it to a mechanic so that he can check the frame (make sure everything is straight), do a compression test, check out the brakes, and just give it a good run down. and i would tell your buddy to just sign up for carfax. the $40 or so (for unlimited) is well worth it especially if he is spending thousands on a car. and if this isnt the right one he could use his carfax on others he is looking at.

Ha I'll try to convince him about the catvack.

Another question Ive been wondering about is whether or not the recall work had been done or nit. How could we tell??

you could ask the seller and hope that they are honest. they should have receipts of recall work. if they dont have them ask what dealer they had them done at and i'm sure they would be more than happy to go to the dealer with you and have new receipts printed out. or maybe you could give the dealer a call. i'm not sure how they manage those things at the dealers.

Almost all Cobras had the recall done. I've never seen one that didn't. You can tell(supposedly) by some kind of dot on the intake. Like blue or red. Mine doesn't have the dot but I know it's done. After 10 years it's probably worn off. But you can call a dealer with the vin, and they can tell you. that's what I did. +1 though, looks like a pretty good deal. And it looks Cobra R red. Make a Cobra R clone!

Looks pretty good, but have it checked very carefully. Cant stress that enough when buying a used V8 stang...even though its not really modded which in this case is a good thing. But window tint on the outside of the window?? Never heard of that one before, I know the back windows are a paint to tint but damn talk about laziness.

Ehh... All he really did was 2 subs and a box, maybe 70lbs max and can be taken out in a few minutes. Not really a reason to skip a car if you ask me.

Definitely. & the window tint on the outside... Welcome to Phoenix, AZ. I'm not trying to be racial/stereotypical, but the owner is a Mexican & I think he just took it to some POS tint shop or maybe he did it himself.

Here's the CarFax (big thanks to Sleeper!). Ugh. 7 owners & a small accident. What does everyone else think?

just something to add to it to help negotiate . like previously stated hve a mechanic get it up on a lift to check for structural damage. also like i said before get a compression check done (or DIY, sears, autozone, and other auto parts stores have kits) to see if the engine is still in tip top shape.

That's a positive way to look at it!

He still wants it. I'm really trying to get him to forget about the subs & DVD stereo. With $1000, like you said, he can definitely do some other mods.

He thinks his parents will be more okay with it if he installs a roll cage (off MM for $440). He also wants a decent stereo but not some retarded space-looking POS HU haha.

How much do you think he could get it for, with a vehicle history like that? 7 owners is a crap load. Maybe $8k cash?

A mechanic is the next step.
