1998 Mustang GT Coil over plug swap possibilities?
hey guys, i officially searched for this info on a previous thread but only found "coil over springs" well i wanna know if its possible to get a coil over plug coil pack setup on my 98 GT...
we do the PI swap all the time, does anyone change the ignition style too?? i like the idea of doing away with a distributor and plug wires so i want the newer style ignition and heads on my 98 GT block and body... i love my old school 98, and dont really want a new edge stang, but i want the goodies you guys get with em lol
im sure i will probably need a computer from a 99-04 GT and obviously the coil packs *which i will prolly buy the MSD coil packs for like 250-300 for the whole set* and the plug in harness to each plug...but shouldnt that be the same from a 98 4.6 to a 2000 5.4L motor?? if so, i have the computer harness and a set of coil packs til i buy the MSD system...
if anyone knows anythin about this i would really appreciate it

The 96-98 coil packs are called a waste spark system because there are actually 4 coils in the coilpack instead of 8 like the COPs and in the wastespark system, when one of the coils discharges it fires 2 spark plugs. One on the power stroke and the other on the exhaust stroke.
In the COP system, each plug fires independantly like the fuel injectors do.
I searched for a thread I read about this conversion once, but couldn't find it.
Basically all you have to do to convert to a COP in a Non pi car is to wire the COPs to the 4 channels so that the same 2 plugs fire at a time. To make it work exactly like the PI engines though, you would have to replace the ECU and wiring though.

wow man, thanks! it seems quite difficult i am gonna try lookin at a newer set up with COPs and see if i can just splice the main harnesses together and work as that guy describes and then if i get it i will post up an article here with pics as to how i did it...
