Default 96 gt performance mods 4.6 sohc

My stepson has a 140,000 Gt and he wants to add mods to make it quicker at the drag strip. Currently have just a American Thunder catback exhaust. Open to suggestions. Also if we were to rebuild the motor is this motor a good motor to modify or should he look for another year Mustang with a different setup. He cannot afford the 2005 and up models with the 300hp. Might be able to spend 6-7k for another car.
thanks
RG

it all depends really, 4.6l sochs are good motors to mess with because theres an abundance of parts to buy.

read up on a PI swap, i dont have time to explain it, but its taking better heads 99-04 and putting them on your NPI 4.6l

make sure you port them, and your looking at a 75+ hp gain.

if you like the 99-04 body style, invest in one of those.

underdrive pulleys, gears, throttle bodys, all simple stuff can help.

make sure you shop at www.americanmuscle.com

Well, there are options. The absolute biggest bang for the buck is a 4V Mark VIII engine swap. I swapped it in for under $350 in the motor, but I pulled it from a pick U pull junkyard and got the motor for $219. That is essentially a jump from 215HP to 290HP.

An easier, but more costly way to increase performance is the PI head swap. This can bump you up to 270+HP, but at a high compression ratio.

Even easier and more costly is putting a supercharger on it. That will give you a freaking huge boost in power. Easily 350RWP, but it's costly.

The bread and butter for a 96 is to do a PI swap with LT headers, 4.10 gears and a tuner. That will put way up from the stock power. I chose the Mark VIII route because it was cheap and different.

Did the motor switch need to have a different wire loom?
How difficult to change was the motor change?

Supercharger is inviting.

thanks

I would recommend finding a PI motor and dropping that in there and then doing all your basic bolt-ons to that. You should be about to find really nice PI motors for less then $1K and it's well worth it
