For those who have seen an increase in MPG with a CAI...
Please share what brand of CAI you have installed? Im a little bit desperate for mpg here. Im getting around 12 mpg on my 99 GT. Its stock but i want to increase the mpg. Im going to change the spark plugs soon, but also want to make the air flow less restrictive. maybe that would help. Im thinking about going with K&N, But i just want to make sure before I buy it.
k&n or jlt are the best.... 12mpg!!! that is extrememly low from what i've gotten out of my 2 stangs.... how many miles do you have on it? make sure you do the spark plugs, use sythetic oil(i seen a 1.5mpg increase using it, now averaging 1 mpg more), check your air pressure in your tires, clean maf sensor, run some zmax through it one time to clean everything out.... all that should help out.... blt i had bbk on my 97, it was ok, i am going with jlt next
12??? That's completely rediculous, what have you done to your car? Sounds like the 02 sensors are gone or not working.

Thanks guys for your replies. It has 65k miles. It was really taken care of. Its all stock. Nothing done to the car. The air filter is clean so thats not the problem. I did run fuel injector cleaner - didnt really help. I keep my tires at 37psi. Im going to do like you guys said. The little things like switch to synthetic blend, Change the spark plugs, Clean the air sensor. If that doesnt help greatly, Ill have to look into replacing things like an 02 sensor. Id be happy with just 16mpg. =( Thanks again guys. Any more help is appriciated on which CAI is best for mpg.
wow, doesn't seem like it was taken well care of with that kind of mileage.... but that's just my opinion.... i was averaging 19.5mpg with my 2004 gt, but all the sudden i am getting 17mpg now with no explaination.... well for the CAI question, the one that flows the most air will be your best bet, that is why i put up either k&n fipk or the jlt rai/cai.... both of them are really good products, i am personally going with the RAI, it has the most proven gains.... which would give you more gas mileage... make sure your odometer is correct also! that happened to my on my 97 and it turned out my plastic gear was almost shredded, lol... good luck
37psi in your tires, are you reading the side of the tire for your psi? The sticker in the door jam will tell you what you should have for pressure. Don't run no more then 32psi, they only call for 30psi. With 37psi in your tires, while your driving your tires are heating up and the pressure is increasing. You keep driving that way, and we'll be seeing you on the news because your tires blew out due to excessive pressure and you'll lose control no sh*t. Run 30psi at all four corners, JLT for your CAI, Denso Iridium for your plugs, clean the MAF sensor, change your 02 sensors, run some Z-Max through the system fuel and engine. When you change your oil, go with a full synthetic like Castrol Syntec is what I use in all of mine. And I've seen what it is capable of first hand. A dyno tune wouldn't hurt, plus it will give you the full potential of the JLT and plugs. I've run Denso's in all my cars, and I'm going on the fourth season now in my Notch street legal 9 second car. I've been playing with Mustangs for over forty years, no one is telling you to do this all at once. Believe me I know it's costly, the dyno tune alone save for last that will cost the most but well worth it. But do change the rest mentioned, and clean the MAF with CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor cleaner nothing else or you might be buying a new MAF sensor too. The can is like a lite grey in color, and about the size of a can of W-D 40. Good luck, Mike. SCT Tuner.
Thanks so much for all your input guys. Its greatly appriciated. Well i just filled up my gas tank and did the math and sadly, im getting 9mpg. Its like im driving a Hummer. I dont have a lead foot, infact im slow on take offs, and easy on braking. I keep the RPMs at 1000-1500 while driving. As far as the tire pressure, the Pirellis say Max 50psi on my tires. So i went 13 lesser than what the tire says. I didnt have an idea what the PSI was because on the door sticker it said PSI - but no number under it? One question - I asked my father this and he isnt sure (im no mechanic), when you take off the intake, are you able to visibly see that the MAF is dirty? He thinks it shouldnt be dirty because the air is filtered clean anyway. Ill also go to Jiffy Lube, get a full synthetic oil change along with a free lube Wouldnt hurt. Thanks again guys!!
9 mpg!!!! WTF!!! Are you sure that car is running ok? That's insane! The only way my car would get 9 mpg is if it had a hole in the fuel tank and all the gas was pouring out AND I was driving everywhere floored in 1st gear... If you're getting 9 mpg you've got bigger issues than a CAI can fix bro.
My car got 20 miles per gallon when it was stock. I dunno what it gets now, because I don't care about the mileage it gets, but it's supercharged and I drive it fun, and I still get waaaaay better than 9 mpg. Or even 12 for that matter.
That's mind-numbingly terrible mileage. Maybe your neighbors are siphoning your gas out while you're sleeping or something. Damn.

Thanks for making me feel terrible than i already am. =l I think most of it has to do with the spark plugs. Im certain that the previous owner never changed them. That they are the ones that came out of the factory when he first bought the car. 65k miles put on the spark plugs. If its not the plugs, then im all at a loss here..Maybe my fuel injectors need to be replaced? I dont know.
Is your car smoking at all? If I were you...I would inspect all my fuel lines from the tank to the injector's. Do you ever smell gas? I drive my car about 150 miles aday sometimes sitting in rush hour traffic for 4-5 hours, stopping and going all day and I get from 22-24mpg. Something is deff. wrong bud. I would hold off on the entire CAI thing and focus on the bigger problem infront of you. You may need that 200$ on something else. Whenever you decide to get a CAI, make sure you dont get a metal one. I have a BBK ....looks good....but gets very hot. HEAT=. Good luck.
9 mpg?wow,do a full tune up,fuel filter, injectors, plugs, everything.check your brakes to see if they are dragging as well.is it an auto or manual?might not be shifting into od it its an auto.check fuel lines, tank, hell get a locking cap if you park outside.check every possibility.sensors etc..does the car run strong still?engine noise excessive etc? might have been abused, and your not aware.hoepfully engine work isnt needed
Okay thanks again guys. Back to the question - Which brand is best for MPG? I was talking to my dad and i wanted to get a K&N which is around 160$ on ebay and he said its going to be a waste of money and that all CAIs are the same and does the same job which is suck in cold air. And that the fact that K&N doesnt go into the fender making it a short ram? so its sucking in hotter air. Also to add to that question i have another one.
My dad had 3 cars in his past time - an Acura TL 2003, a 04 Mustang GT, and now a 06 Scion xB. He had put in CAIs in every car. Except the fact that the Acura got about 3-4 mpg better. The Mustang got 1mpg less. And now his Scion his mpg staied the same. The ONLY difference he did here was that he disconnected the batteries on the Mustang and his Scion. The Acura he didnt touch the battery. He thinks its something with the computer being shut off and turned back on recognizing the greater air from the CAI. Could this be true?
All the CAIs he used was BBK.
Thanks guys

I'm not trying to make you feel bad, I'm trying to tell you that you have a problem that CAI is probably not going to fix. Since the only problem you've mentioned is the car getting 9 mpg, and I'm not there to hear/see/drive the car, then it's not like I can go dropping good ideas all over the place to fix it. All I know is that 9 mpg is not normal. At all.
Another member mentioned to check your brakes. Not a bad idea at all. The only problem I've had with my car (1999) was when one of the brake calipers (rear) seized up. One of the rubber boots on the caliper tore, and road grime got in there and rusted it solid. It'll definitely put your gas mileage in the hurt locker. I've heard of other people who've experienced it.
I never saw any noticeable gains in hp or mpg from CAI in the first place.

I had a CDC Shaker System CAI with a S&B intake filter on my 2007 4.6 Mustang GT and only got 17 mpg. Then I had Brenspeed do a performance tune for me and I am getting 22 mpg. The CAI itself will not do anything much. You will need to fix whatever is causing the poor gas mileage, do your mods, and get a custom tune to make your car perform the way it is supposed to.
