Question Replace front brakes with a kit or have them smoothed out...?

Basically if I'm traveling at a decent speed at all and put on the brakes, whether with slight pressure or heavy braking, it shakes the whole car. Been doing that since I bought it about a month ago...I'm at the point now where it bugs the crap out of me. ha

I did some poking around and found a whole front brake replacement kit, (brembo rotors and oem pads) for $160

or the local shop says they can smooth..? them out for $80 an axel, then pads would be extra I'm sure.

Anyone have any experience or advice?
I'm not really savvy on the slowing down portion of our cars

if your mechanically inclined i would just do the brembo kit. if not then let the mech do it you can get the brake rotors "turned" "resurfaced" "smoothed" whatever you want to call it done at orielys for a tad bit cheaper but you have to take off the rotors just depends on your situation

Well, likely all you have is warped rotors, and most of the time you can have them turned, install new pads and they will be perfect, but $80 and axle is way overpriced, it shouldn't cost more than $15 per rotr, so $60 for all 4, plus pads. For $160 for the brembos isn't bad, but you'll still want to do the rear. Doing the brakes is very easy and doesn't require much in the way of tools, if you want to save $$$ and do it yourself you can search for instructions in here, post a thread, or pm me and I'll send you step-by-step. Having rotors resurfaced is fine and will work perfectly as long as they are more than the minimal thickness. Good luck.

My thoughts exactly,
This is the same shop that wanted to charge me $18 a wheel just to balance the tire!
They used the "lifetime of the tire" we will balance them....psh

So yea I might poke around and just have them turned.

I would rather save the money and use them for some go-fast mods

:racin366, I'm interested if you have that write up I am very much a do-it-yourself-er.
ps I read that article about your stang in the closed course road race - that type of race is my passion, I hope to enter myself one day. Keep up the good work I love reading about you latest events and trials!

Don't have the rotors turned. Yes, its completely acceptable to turn them, and they'll perform fine- but they're not as good as new rotors. Whenever you remove material from the rotor, you're affecting its ability to absorb and dissipate heat.

I'd sooner buy a cheap set of new rotors, than go for machined, used rotors. I used to warp rotors like crazy in my '98. I probably did brakes once a year, or so. It was definitely my driving habits, but I grew tired of constantly changing brakes. When I upgraded to 13" Cobra Front Brakes, I extended the service life by at least 200%. 2 years and not a hint of fade or warpage when I finally sold the car.

The Cobra brake upgrade was $400 so it might be a bit out of your budget. In that case, I'd just recommend the Brembo kit, with pads a rotors. Not a bad price at all.

yeah quick4.6 is right the 13"front cobra will last longer than the gt. I've had mine nearly 3 years and my habit is not that good, daiy driver and still have more than half way left. So I would save for a set of 13" kit if thinking you will keep your car for a while

Thanks guys!
Ya'll are being a really big help!
Money is not too big an issue when we're talking about having to replace a part thats already going bad, or at least thats the excuse I use to get away with it.

So you're saying just get the upgraded rotors only, to fit the stock calipers? Like the set on the AM website?

ok, rotor question:
replacement brembos vs upgraded cross drilled/ slotted?

I'm only looking at replacing front brakes right now, just to get the shaking away. I dont street race or brake hard in most circumstances. I do take car of my car, and occasionally drop it in a weekend show here and there. So is there a BIG difference in stopping power between the two rotors, or will I have to have a pretty heavy breaking foot whilst racing through rain (hypothetical) to notice anything between the two? Or are the difference more about the life range of each?
Yes I'm a newbie with this brake stuff, but you guys are doing a great job at helping me out!

Get the Brembo gear hands down. That cross drilled/slotted stuff is usually crap. Brembo builds OEM grade stuff (including supplying the factory rotors on the Cobra.)

The Brembo rotors that I got with the Cobra upgrade where phenomenal, so I'm assuming that the stock GT replacement Brembo stuff will be of the same quality (albeit a little bit smaller.)

Good luck!
