Default how to tell if its a V8 or V6 Mustang

ok guys im buying my first mustang in the next few days and i have decided on a 2002 gt convertible

i know very little about these cars

there is a 2002 for sale close to me and the seller claims its a GT
there is no GT badging on the car at all. this person seems kind of fishy and i dont trust him

I am going to check it out later on today whats the easiest way for me to tell if its a V8 or a V6
does the V8 have something written on the engine

sorry for the noob question

Open up the hood and see if it has one of these in it:
http://image.carcraft.com/f/9299639/..._GT+Engine.jpg

That and check the VIN. The vin should start with "1FALP44X"-----
The X means it was a 4.6L car.

Nobody is going to judge here. Its better to ask than to try to keep your pride and mess up. Count the ignition wires, the number of pipes coming off the exhaust manifold, there are infinite ways to tell. Here are two pictures the first one is a v6 from an 02 the second a v8 from the same year.

That's too much for that car. What's he smoking?

Plus he should be shot for putting those taillights on a Mustang. Oh wait, It's got a "Boom Box".........

Best way is to get the vehicle identification number from the guy. That number has coding information within it to tell what options were on the car from the factory. Certainly though changes could have been done to the car since then.
There are manuals and online websites which can help you decipher what that vin number means. For example there is a Ford Motor Company parts website which specifically asks for the vin number before it sends you to parts available for the car. Others on here may have more information as to what should be on that car via the vin number.

The easiest way to tell the difference is in the speedometer cluster. The GT's have a 150mph speedo and the v6's have a 110 or 120 (can't remember exactly). Of course it's easily swapped out, but it should be a dead giveaway.

in addition to what everyone else said, looks for 8 of something under the hood like exhaust manifolds, COP, wires ect.

The GT also comes with foglights standard, as well as dual exhaust standard, but these are easily added.

But check the VIN number. But if you are this distrusting of the vehicle and the seller, i'd look elsewhere, i'd only buy from someone i'd trust

actually the easiest way to be for sure is to just count the spark plugs and wires. someone could easily switch out the cluster but if it aint got 8 spark plugs it aint a gt engine.
