I was looking into the GTI because I have always liked the VW since owning a 83 diesel rabbit. These new GTI's will beat a 98 Mustang GT it seems with two good drivers of the same size.

It seems VW has come a long way. I bet the Corrado was even faster than that. Ford has got to step up with things and don't even go to the 03 Cobra, when a Subaru can come that close to beating it. Ford has to step up to the plate. Chevy may possible lauch the Holden's Chevelle in the states. Who cares that we have a 500 HP 150K race car, Corvette has a 600HP on for less $$. At least Ford Pickup pulls in most of the money that Ford makes, at least that will keep them in business. Again just my 2¢

Yes I agree,Ford definately needs to step it up. They lack on performance. But as far as VW goes, I don't like em. I just got rid of a turbocharged beetle, lol....it was pretty fast, but I'm gonna say, the thing tore up more than anything. I mean it was in the shop more than it was in my driveway. This was an 01 by the way. Transmission gave out, turbo went out twice, Misfiring, other mechanical problems, and right before we traded it in the gauge panel was lighting up and the gauges quit working every now and then. lol

yeah but the 98 was still the npi sohc engine. I mean ford did step it up a lil by putting the pi heads in and hiking the power up to 260hp. But i also agree, ford needs to put some more power into the ponies so that they will be taken more seriously. I mean i have a 97 with 215hp stock. That is pretty pathetic for a so called "mucle car." DOnt get me wrong i love my car, but what was ford thinking putting a 215hp engine in a gt, i mean really. Hopefully the 05 stangs will really have over 300hp in the gt. Then they mayb ford will be taken a little more serious.
Originally posted by 1998GT they did step it up, 300hp.. you guys keep talking about the 98s and 97s and stuff.. what else can they do? 98 productino car again?
When did they step up GT to 300 HP? This is news to me. Or are you just going by the most recent article put out by MMFF. Don't believe anything till you see it.
That Chevelle/ Morono is packing more than 400HP.

That's odd, I always thought VW/Audi were very stringent with their quality of their cars. I had my rabbit for a while without one problem. It actually was running good when I pulled it apart to make it go faster, thing is, about 10 cases of beer later I forgot where everything went.

I'm assuming your talking about the VR6 GTI, not the 1.8 turbo. They already have a 230 some hp model VR6 and will have a 250 hp model with the next body restyling. I think it will be AWD, too. A buddy of mine has a 1.8 turbo GTI. They are quick, but my 6 will take it.

I just highly doubt Chevy would bring a 400 HP car to compete with their new base Corvette which happens to have 400 HP too. But i do agree with Driftpin on that Ford should of least stepped it up a few more notches on the GT, but 300 HP out of a GT ain't too bad either.
