Default cylinder head

How easy is it to blow a cylinder head on oh say a 2002 gt when I took it in I thought it was just an ignitor then ford gave me a call and said it will be a while before I drive the mustsang again its got a blown head.
It happened pulling out of work It was fine 1 sec and when I hit the blinker bam pop pop pop. sounded like some one yanked a spark plug I pulled over seen the broken ignitor and hole into the cylinder now pumping air. so anyone else have thise sort of thing happen . I want to know If It was my fualt or just an insint mortality to a part.

It's seems to happen a lot. More often in the trucks. I know Kappaball had it happen to him three times.

Isn't this the spark plug blowing out of the head thing I have heard people mention?

I can see it happening, there aren't very many threads to hold those plugs in.

Too bad this happened, hopefully you got it covered under warranty.

thats exactly what happend is it that common I just found out today ford said the old owner put the wrong plugs in, is that bull and their trying not to say this thing is going to blow every 5000 miles. how common is it should I keep the mustang or buy a new car and tell them to keep it. I don't want to fix a blown head twice a year, I buy my dodge back if thats the case.

Its odd for the plug to blow out of a non supercharger mod motor. It can happen when the plugs are replaced and not tightened correctly. I've personally fixed about six Lightnings with blown out spark plugs. Some still had the original plugs. Sometime in '03 Ford made the SC 5.4L with more threads on the head for better contact with the plug. If your remove a spark plug and look down into the head if you see threads all the way up too the tapered seat, then the head is the newest version. Ford also issued a new spark plug that has more threads on it as well. As a noted the new 5.4L 3-valve head has a new spark plug design and will the same as the 4.6L for the 05 Mustang GT. :thumbup

In my opinion, having it happen once too often.

I can't see how someone could put the wrong plugs in, unless Ford came out with a special plug to help with an already known flaw in the heads, which is the lack of threads in the heads. I think they are making excuses. I would make them back it up and show you the plugs it should have had, next too the plugs that were in it and explain the difference. They won't do it. Tell them to just be honest and admit it has a known problem and that they will replace the head. Chances are, it won't happen again, even with the same type of head.

But yes, I have heard of this happening on Modular motors for years. Not a usual thing, but on occasion. Not something to worry about.
