If you put them in yourself(huge pain the a55) i would buy the kit, if you bring it in to shop then i wouldn't worry about it. This is from past experience.
I would buy the kit. When I had mine done at 80K miles all the bearing were worn so the shop recommended I get all new. I could have saved about $35 if I had bought the kit myself but the car was already apart and I couldn't wait.

meatball so when u switched, what did u switch from? 3.08 or 3.27?? So did it feel like a new car like most people say?
sorry, don't know what was in car originally (same as yours?) - felt somewhat different; shifts quicker at low throttle opening. Both of us wish we had a 5-spd.. keep you posted on work in progress including full PI swap and torque converter!! - it BETTER feel like a different car ($$$) -

thats cool meatball..but did it feel faster in the SOTP?
sorry didn't answer your question / yes, given the kind of driving I do (heavy city; so not too much opportunity to get on it)

I would assume you wont be doing the install yourself MBH. The reason I say this is because of your question you have probably never done a gear swap before. This is one mod best left to people who do it for a living. The shop should tell you whether a new kit will be needed. When I had mine done I simply told them I wanted a new install kit used and they did it. I rode in a friends 97 auto after he switched to 3.73's and it felt like it had more get up and go to it. But he also did some tranny work at the same time...but I would assume most of the difference came from the gears (still wont outrun me...heheh). If you start getting spin try some drag radials. That will make huge difference and will round out the gear install. Keep us posted.

Oh i definitely wont be doing the install myself!!!! Ill have Modular Depot do it. THats why i am waiting til tax return so i can pay for it. I am hoping i can squeeze out a 14.5 afterwards. If i can manage it i will get a dyno tune at the same time.

If you install yourself, I suggest buying new ring carrier bearings. They seem to go out a lot on our cars. Mine went out at 50,000. My friends went out at 25,000. Both cars are 98's. My opinion have them professionally installed. If their not installed 100% to spec. They will howl/whine. Very obnoxious sounding. It cost me $300 for install and replaceing those bearings. my .02

MBH - you're going to like'em. Be interesting to see changes in 60' & 1/4 mile times when spring comes. Enjoy!
