Default new guy/ horsepower question

hey ...new in here and this is a great site..lots of good info.
my question is on HP..back in the day ford use to say some engines had so much horsepower but in reality they had alot more but were given different numbers for insurance reasons etc...do they still do that? ive got a 2002 gt vert ..i know they say 260hp but in real life are they more? like 280 or so?

sorry if its a dumb question- im kinda new to this. i never cared about this stuff till i got my mustang. my last car was a subaru impreza rs..good little car, nice 4 wheel drive, but the mustang is soooooooooooo much more fun!

thanks...tony

- no, good question; I remember the introduction of the Thunderbolt Fairlanes w/their "425hp" dual-quad 427's in 1964. Your car is rated just about perfect and normally dynos around 225-230rwhp. We feel the new 05 Mustangs may be underrated about 10-15hp given their dyno numbers.

Default ah..

ah... thats pretty much what i thought...an older guy who just got a 05 vert and a cobra guy at the gym with 440hp ( so he says ) were in a HP argument today.
thanks for the answer..im planning to get my hp to the 300-320 or so range and just wanted to see what my baseline was.

300-320hp...living large huh?

bolting on Vortech runs yours up to about 330-340rwhp
CNC-ported heads and somebody's cams would make around 300rwhp w/decent exhaust & usual bolt-ons; car needs some gears first. About the 300-320; nothing to laugh at, definately increases the smile factor.

yeah ...all that would be GREAT...but money is a little tight right now so i may be starting small...new shifter, FIPK, and some different mufflers. just fun stuff, nothing that is going to add even 20hp..but like you said " increase the smile factor!"
