In Phoenix it is a must. Keeps it cooler inside, and not only looks better, but keeps your interior looking better, as it protects against sun damage. It is also nice at night when some douche bag has his brights on in your rear view.

I think tint looks good. I don't know how the police like it up in Kansas, though. Your tint might just peel off and you can clean up with alcohol. Use a sharp razor blade for trouble areas with glue, but be careful around rubber moldings. Use a new, sharp razor at a good angle and you won't scratch the glass. Tint on a Mustang down here runs $120-$150.

Same thing happened to mine. All I did was take a blow dryer (i didn't have a heat gun at the time), put it to max heat, and went over the glass slowly, and then from the cornor of the window, i started to peel off the tint very slowly, so that the glue underneath would come off as well (if not its a pain in the ass and gets stuck). If the glue does get stuck, just keep applying some heat to it, and a little Acetone (nail polish remover works great as well) and it will come off. The rear window was the hardest part, its so cramped in the back seat. Or, you could turn your car on, put it in the sun, turn your heat on inside the car, and wait like 30 minutes, come back and the tint should melt off like butter. That just takes longer and i'm impatient. I also got a deal for a tint job here for 100$ , 20% tint, so I think I'm gonna go ahead with that one.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

i didn't think it would look that good eather but my car is viper red and the red tint realy sets off the paint. and the good thing is here in Va. there isn't that many cars with colored tint. and there isn't anyone with red. i have only seen maybe two cars with colored tint. 0ne was a blue GT with blue tint and a blue taurus with blue tint. so i get a lot of good feedback with my red.

Did you buy yours new that way or is it possible a previous owner had the windows tinted? If it is a good tint job, it might be hard to tell. That piece of junk GTI I had for about a month had what I would have sworn was factory tint but the owner at a local tint shop looked at it and told me that it was aftermarket (I was curious because I thought it was kind of dark for a factory job.)

I bought mine new from the dealer, and the tint is a very light tint on both sides, and up on the windshield. I also have the dot matrix pony on the windshield. You really can't tell there is a tint until you roll down the windows...
My wife had hers done in a place in Tukwila, WA- they did a SUPERB job!!! She's had it going on 3.5 years now, and it's perfect!

I don't think 5% is legal for front door windows in any state, but I could be wrong. I do think 20% might be legal in some of the sunnier Western states, right? In Tennessee, 35% is the darkest that can legally be on front windows (rear quarters in Mustangs, etc. or rear door windows can be 5%). If you go to a tint shop and want anything darker than 35% on front windows, you have to pay cash and get no receipt because they could be fined something like $10,000 for putting it on for you and if an officer decides to call you on it, you have to remove the tint or pay a fine.

About ten years ago, my mom had a Hyundai hatchback - one of the early ones when they first came out and not riced - with 20% all the way around. She got stopped one day (was in her mid-40s at the time) and the officer told her that she had to remove it or pay a fine to which she replied, "Well, I like my tint, so I guess I'll be paying that fine." She did, left the tint on, and never got stopped for it again, so it is kind of a gamble. When I have mine done, I'm probably just going to go 35% all the way around so that all my windows match and are legal. Driving a yellow Mustang GT with aftermarket exhaust, I don't need to do anything that will call any extra police attention. That said, I would like to go 20% (if not worried about getting stopped) because, as far as appearance goes, the darker the better on cars that are yellow, red or white.

Okay, I went and had the tint done today (i figured after hearing everyone say you must have tint cause it makes it look better, i might as well). I chose to do 20% for the entire car except the windshield. And wow, it does make a difference. The car looks really sharp during the day, and at night, it looks even better with the lights reflecting off of it outside. I'll take some pictures tomorrow to show you what it looks like. Again, thanks for all the input and help on this oh ya, it only cost me 115$ total, and it was done in 45 minutes.

Well actually anything over 18% is legal in tennessee by the way I bought it. A lot of my friends have thiers done at a different shop and was talking about 30&35% tint which was like the 20% I had seen, so I dont know if shops go by different ratings or something. Because where I get mine done my dad had his f-350's front windows done to match the rear factory tint and they put 20% on it and it matched perfect. I have double ply tint with 20% and something called platnum tint. It makes a light silver window tint. But I got pulled over for my tail lights being too bright and got wrote up for the tint.

In Arizona you can paint the back ones black if you want. I believe its 30% on the fronts.

Hmmm... Every professional shop I have talked to (at least three) and every website I have seen about the subject says that 35% is the maximum legal tint for front windows in Tennessee. In some areas, the police don't enforce it as fervently, though. My mom's ticket was for 20% on her front windows. Of course, generally in this area they don't go so much by percentage ratings as by the 'sight' test. They will hold your license against the inside of the window and if they can read the license from the outside of the window, you're okay. If not, you could get a ticket. The rules for rear windows are different. It was the owner of Hi-Tech in Lenoir City who told me he could get fined $10,000 and possibly get in even more legal trouble for putting anything darker than 35% on the front windows of a car. He said that some police officers will tell you that 20% is okay (as in they probably wouldn't give a ticket), but that the law says 35%.

Most people don't realize it, but headlight or tail-light blackouts and external neon kits are illegal in many places, as well. That's why you get the printed disclaimer with blackouts (for instance) that the parts are 'for show use only' - because they are not street legal in many places. In Tennessee, I believe the law for neons is that the actual lights have to be completely hidden from sight but, as I have never had or been interested in neons, I'm not completely sure - they might not be street legal at all. Some places have laws that anything that could be 'distracting' to another driver is illegal. Just like tint that is darker than what is street legal, many people have blackouts or neons and get away with it, but that is more because the rules aren't enforced than for any other reason.

Also, it is illegal to have any color lights on the exterior of your car aside from white, red or yellow. I know this because back in the 80's I had the idea to give a slight green tint to my headlights (not for 'ricer' reasons, the term didn't really even exist then - I was a fan of the comic book character The Green Hornet.) I got stopped and had to remove it because it was not white, red or yellow. I had passed countless cops with it on there and none had ever said anything about it (since that law is mainly to stop folks from impersonating 'official' vehicles), but this one officer decided to enforce the letter of the law. Luckily, it was just two or three layers of green Saran wrap, so it came off easily. Anyway, that means that the blue 'h.i.d.' lights are, technically, illegal, but lots of people have them and you can buy them (and tinted bulbs in various colors for your headlights) just about anywhere.

As far as your dad's F350, there are different rules for pickup trucks than for cars or SUVs for some reason (again, I have consistently been told this at more than one tint shop.) Rules regarding tint on trucks are a little more lenient and the rules that do exist regarding tint on trucks are enforced less often.
