the problem with the GTOs are the weight, kinda like the new shelby is running same track numbers as the 03-04 cobras but 100hp more....
ls2 gto on a diet will beat a cobra especially an auto with tires off the line.... those lsx motors are very sneaky. ls1s react way better to nitrous vs the 4.6, but back to original question
04 GTO will be sorta even with a 99-01 cobra

05+gto beats a 99-01 cobra

my g/f raced her dad
she at the time had a bone stock 2002 Trans am WS6 Auto (ls1) and her dad 05 GTO (ls2) auto, now if you go by HP ratings you think of well we know what will happen 325hp Trans vs 400hp GTO... wrong
they went from a 30mph roll and my g/f stayed right next to her dad and actually started creeping by at the middle of 3rd. i was surprised on how the two cars ran, GTo actually had a catback aswell.

the gto would get stomped - i have raced one with my mods - not saying i destroyed him but i was keeping up - he eventually pulled on me - but they arent nearly as fast as everybody thinks

If weight were equal with a 03/04 Cobra and a LS2 GTO.. I still think the Cobra would take them... You forget that the rated Cobra hp isn't really 390, lol, more like 430bhp. The GTO weighs around 75-100lbs more then the Cobra - so it's not that much of a differance... an awesome run for a stock ls2 gto is around a 12.90x, an awesome run for a stock terminator cobra is in the 12.7 range... that's a pretty big difference imo... I lost but i definatly didn't lose by much to a LS2 GTO in my 2v when I had it, those things must be tough as heck to launch... lol
and I hate when people give me the "well you have a s/c, put a s/c on a gto and see how much you lose by" - it's not an excuse, you race what you have.

They look a LOT like a Grand Prix, and there is NO WAY I would pay that kind of money for a glorified Grand Prix. I can shoehorn a V8 into anything if I want to badly enough.
