i've been looking into the flowmaster mufflers and i'm goin to get the flowmaster 40 series american thunder and i'm wondering not about the muffler itself but the pipes that attach it do they really matter or are all pipes pretty much the same and what is that i see that says like 3.00" in and out or something
I think larger pipes/lose some torque-gain hp and vice versa-all out racing, the bigger the better.street I think most are 2-1/4 and 2-1/2 or something like that

na man, if you are just doing mufflers, cut out your old ones and weld in the new. I have flowmaster 2 chamber 40s on mine and they are SWEET! so, hope this helps

According to a test I read somewhere (forget what magazine now, it was about a year or two ago) the stock mufflers don't flow too badly. The only reason to put on Flowmasters would be for sound. The increase in power is negligible. BUT -- if you do a mid-pipe too, then you're talking some good increases. I had Flow 40s (welded in) and a Predator tune in my car and dyno'd it at 12rwhp more than stock. I put in a uncatted H-pipe and gained an additional 10hp and 25lbft of torque. Not to mention the sound is totally badass.

Damn thats a nice gain in torque! To me it felt like I lost torque when I went to a o/r pipe.
Swapping mufflers without getting rid of the converter or upgrading to bigger pipes will not gain you much power.
I see most mustangs go for a dual 2 1/2 h or x pipe with dual 2 1/2 exhaust running to the back to high flow mufflers of choice.
With my car because of the packaging (different chasis) I have dual 2 1/2 pipe to a 3 inch y pipe then back out to dual 2 1/2 pipes right before a set of super turbo style mufflers at the rear of the car.

I did 2.5 Uncatted H-Pipe to 40 series flows with 3'' turn downs. I get a lot of looks and nods for it.

ok i just picked up the 40 series mufflers from flowmaster now whats the difference between and h pipe and an offroad x pipe and i though the car already came with an h pipe whats the difference and benefits
H pipe sounds better, X pipe has I higher power and torque increase, if it were me, I would go with the off road H pipe, your 40s, and strait pipe it with some MIL eliminators!!!! Nice choice!

What I have read says h pipes provide more low end torque and a muscle car sound while the x pipe provides a more euro, exotic car sound and provides more upper end horsepower. and the loss of torque, A trade off as always
