Default Question on painting cobra wheels

so i want the black cobra rims on american muscle but I dont have 520$ which i how much they cost.

I have seen a set of 03/04 chrome cobra ones go in a paper for 250$ and a set of machined ones for 200$

Are these wheels ok to paint? What kind of paint should i use that will stay on and be nice and glossy like that?

Also are chrome rims alot heavier than machined? and are they harder to paint?

thanks

Powder coating would be far more durable for wheels. A simple black shouldn't cost very much at all. I just dropped off a set of valve covers to be done. The range of colors and textures is just amazing, everything from basic primary colors, to leather, to metalics. I picked a rather elaborate color which is actulally a two part application. There was one color, again two part, which was almost a dead ringer for the sonic blue on my car, metal flake and all. My color has to be custom mixed, then applied in two applications. The powder is about 14 dollars a pound. The finisher figured he needed two or three pounds of each color which would put the cost of powder alone at about 60 to 90 dollars including shipping. Then he's charging me 60 dollars per cover to appply it. If I had picked a single coat color he had in stock it would have been just 50 dollars per cover. I have expensive tastes.

OK, so I've added a few things to it. Check my Profile - too many to list here.

I figured I could do it since I am able to sand blast them and then have a compressor and gravity fed spray gun. Im not talking about spray cans of paint u know. I just figured I could do it myself.

Man shouldn't be a problem! I had some white steel wheels on my Bronco I painted with a rattle can and they looked good till the day I sold it. With actual good auto paint it should be 100000 times better

I used this stuff on my brake calipers. I could see it working well on your wheels. It settles smooth so there are no brush strokes. Its an epoxy style paint that dries with a gloss. I personally feel like it's your best bet. I know you'll want to test it first, but just know that once you mix all the chemicals, you only have a certain amount of time before the epoxy sets inside the mixing can. Read up on it, its more than just regular paint. You would probably need more than one can though.

Well, if you can get the existing paint/ powder coating off, then you could probably use any kind of enamel paint. You can't paint over powder coating. Since you have the tools, you could easily re-do the paint should it need it. Powder coating would still be more durable, but a good enamel coat with clear over should be easy to apply, look good, and last a long time. I've seen people paint chrome, but it needs to be carefully prepped and primed. I'm sure your sandblaster would go a long way to giving the paint a bit more tooth.
