Hello,
I am new to the mustang world. I just picked up a '97 SOHC 4.6 engine for next to nuthin and I would like to beef it up. I wouldn't mind boring it out and putting new rings in it, if this is reccomended. What I need is a recipe to beef it up. besides a KN filter and a supercharger what else can be done?
and if I do go the supercharger method what sources are there for this engine.
I'm putting this into a Shelby 427 cobra roadster I'm scratchbuilding.
thanks fellas

Your puting a non PI 4.6 2v in a Shelby 427 cobra? Sounds like a waste of money. Even with a SC that engine will put out about 300WHP. You might as well buy a new VT engine to drop in the Cobra...or a 427

ForGetAboutIt Big Block is the way to go for that 427
yeah everyone else is saying to scrap the engine you have but if thats the engine you got and the one you want to work with then do it... the big question is do you want the car to be a performer or just a cruiser ?? if your wanting a little extra power out of it, bore it, put some cams in it, some better pistons, you can up your compression, new rings,up the fuel injectors, buy an aftermarket intake manifold, bigger throttle body, and some longtube headers, and an off road Hpipe. you can get a procharger kit if you really want to spend the money but just make sure you lower the compression if you bore it and put new pistons in it.
Check the cylinder compression to how things are looking. Rebuild if necessary. Swap to PI heads with good cams. The compression should be 10:1 with stock pistons. With the right tuning you should make around 350 crankshaft horsepower. If that isn't enough, you can use a supercharger. But remember, your Cobra should only weigh about 2100 pounds. It doesn't take much to make that scary fast. I've ridden in one, at normal speeds. It was scary just being in something so small.
If you do a PI swap and then a SC, you need to get that compression down a little. But for me, i would definitley go with the pushrod route. you can usually find 351 blocks here and there for cheap and then stroke it.
