Well I guess I'll have to tell the Pro Stock guys I know, and there are quite a few, and the Super Stock guys, and the Super Comp and Super Gas guys, and the Comp Eliminator guys that they are stupid because markwondi says they are wasting their money.

Ask them. In fact, you'll find not all of them have the 9" rearend like you ASSume they do.
And I'll ask you, why tell a street car owner on here to run a 9" rear that is not only heavier and requires more power, but will rid the ABS and traction control? He doesn't own a "Pro Stock" car now does he?
Sounds like apples and oranges. A properly setup 8.8 will handle all the power a street car can dish out. Yeah it has limits but until you get way into the 4 digit power numbers, it's fine.

my buddy has a mustang running 9.96 in the 1/4 mile . this car is driven to the track and making wicked power and the 8.8 rear has held up well. if you seen this car on the street you would think it was stock except for the rims and drag radials. he has over 15000 in the motor, the license plate says 1badstang and it can back it up.Its the fastest car I have been in.

I never said it wouldn't. This whole pissing match started because I simply suggested that with the upgrades to the 8.8 unit that were being considered (new axles, carrier, c-clip eliminators, etc.) that for not much more you could upgrade to a bullet proof set up. I was simply making the point that with slicks and a fair amount of power, in stock configuration, the 8.8 has it's weaknesses. And to correct markwonderboy's statement about Pro Stocks running the 8.8, I've yet to see one in any of the cars I've been around, due to the unpracticality of making gear changes at the track for one. It's funny how on this forum when somebody offers up a difference of opinion to one of the self proclaimed 'experts', you get lambasted for having an opinion. Maybe it's time to kiss and make up.

I have yet to see a 9 inch rear end fit to drop straight in without any major work for under $1000 whereas a set of 31 spline axles and gears would be $700 at most. There's absolutely no reason to spend another 300 bucks at least and add that kind of weight under the rear end of the car.
You're just getting ill because someone has some experience that doesn't jive with what you know. I was taught at a very early age that there's more than one way to skin a cat.

Get pissy all you want. You're racing experience is from 20 years ago, when everyone used the 9" rearends. You're opinion is the same as the chevy boys who swear by the 14 bolt rears as the only way to go. Meanwhile, we have cars run 8 second ET's in a simple 10 bolt 8.5" these days. You may not believe me, but next time you attend any FFW, NMRA, NHRA event, ask and you'll be amazed at how many run the 8.8" rearend.
You also suggested throwing a 9" rearend under his car. Great, so we'll give a kid that has a street car a new rearend now with no ABS, no traction control, and costs a fortune.
I used a 8.8" on my car from day one, however it has a 9" UNDER it right now. The 9" is all I'll ever need, but I also have VERY high expectations for the car and chose it for that reason. Comparably, the 9" cost me double what I built my 8.8" for.

The 9" center section and axle tubes alone run over $1000.
I have ~$3400 in my rearend, and I did most of the work myself.
I've found a very small number of 9's stuffed with gears and 31 splines ready to drop under a car for as low as $1100 but they require a core swap and since I have a 7.5, I don't qualify for that one. So I'd have to pay 2 grand.

You are the one who seems to be getting all bent out of shape. How do you know to what extent my racing experience is? My racing experience may have begun 30+ years ago, but that doesn't mean I left the sport does it? FYI, my experience includes everything from crewing on a fuel funny car in the 70's, to engine maintainence on a Pro Stock team as recent as 2003, who just happened to win the last 3 championships, to engine building and tuning for several Nascar teams at present. Seems a little hypocritical to be impuning my opinions when you have a 9" rear IN YOUR OWN CAR.

How so? What do you know about my car, and my requirements for a rearend? That's right, you don't....
So please, tell me exactly why this person NEEDS a 9" rearend like you suggested? You have never explained this, other than stating 8.8" are garbage and not used on Prostock cars (which is an ignorant lie).
As for getting bent out of shape, you're the one calling me "markwonderboy" correct? Obviously you can't have a logical and direct arguement on the internet, now can you?
