i just recently purchase a diablo predator programmer U7146, i am still experimenting on some of the features it has. is it better to advance timming versus setting it back? thanks in advance.

I did advance the timing 1.0 deg. but becareful too much may result in engine knock. You should be using 93 octane with the Diablo tune as is. I have not heard any knocking even with load or high rpm pulls. If you have a power adder like a turbo or supercharger then I wouldn't play with the timing or fuel without a dyno and a wideband O2 .... The best results I've had with my U7146 is if you have an automatic then you can adjust the shift harshness and shift points. So you can chirp the tires. Check out the Diablosport website it has software downloads that allow you to display live data and update via. the web. As well as custom tunes.

Messing with spark without full knowledge of what it's affecting can lead to lots of little engine pieces all over the road. If you want to street tune you need a wideband and you'll need to datalog to make sure the tune is solid.

Since you're located in California, I'd be cautious advancing the timing beyond loading the Premium Fuel tune that came with your tuner. 91 octane doesn't give you much head room to work with after you get the advance that is already in the tune.

If you are running a power-adder or nitrous, you need to let us know so we can give you a fully informed opinion.

CAI's tend to run a little lean, so if you have one of those keep that in mind as well. Detonation = a bad thing.

UPDATE: I can see the next question coming, so here is a link to an article about Wideband sensors and tuning:

Wideband O2 Sensor Shootout! | FordMuscle Magazine

Tuning your motor without anyway to tell what its doing to the car is like clearing a minefield by stomping around with heavy boots. About the time you figure out you're in trouble, boom.

(Ah, shoot, just noticed that page 2 of the article requires a paid subscription. Will try to find similar NOT needing coin!)

OK, MMFF has the goods:
