After 2k miles I went to change my oil for the first time. The car is a 96' GT with 118k miles. Very well taken care of and runs strong...no problems. I never noticed smoke before, but upon the first start up after I changed the oil to synthetic it smoked through the pipes. Now 300 miles later, it has stopped but will still puff a little when I get on it. My second question is-should I run a higher weight oil considering the mileage?
the smoke is probibly just the old, thinner oil being burned...shouldnt worry unless it gets too extreme, as far as heavier oil goes, you should just stick with 10w30 syntec

The GT's call for 5W20.... Unless you are doing winter driving... Then a different weight would help to get it warm faster.
So what I am seeing is most likely the "cleaning" of the internals and pan, ect. I've never seen 5w20 as the norm for the 96 GT. The manual, chilton, haynes, and members here say 10w30. Can I assume the 5w20 heavier weight would help with the mileage on my car.
I thought the 96-98 cars used 5W30? I know the new edge cars switched to 5w20, but I haven't heard of any 4.6 cars requiring 10w30. In your case for the next oil change try the 10w30. I know my old 97 used oil between changes after I switched to Mobil 1 synthetic, but I don't know about smoking...

I could be wrong and have to check on this but- my 96' owners manual and car both state 10w30 all over the place. Possibly starting in 97" the 5w recommendation started?
I've always heard that if a motor was run on one type of oil, just keep with it, especially after 100+K miles. Synthetic is thinner and will go past worn seals and rings easier than fossil oil. I don't think it a cleaning action, unless you have a special "self cleaning motor" like my kitchen oven. I think it's just the thinner oil being burnt by worn engine parts. Put regular oil back in it and leave it.
