Default My 2003 GT Mustang makes a very Loud Whining noise

Yesterday my car started making a loud whining noise and I noticed what kinda smelled like something burning. The smell went away after a few minutes. At first I noticed it only made the noise when I had the clutch pushed in. After about 10 min it stopped. Later in the afternoon, it started again except this time I could not get it in gear. At least it felt like I couldn't. I ended up having my car towed home. I started it today and it makes the loud whining loise when the car is just started and in neutral and sounds like it's making all kinds of garbled noises under the hood. Any ideas on what this could be? My clutch, transmission or just a broken belt?

Thanks abunch.

First, Welcome to AFM!

Second, sounds like you have a broken clutch. Could just be a bad throw-out bearing. How many miles on your car?

UPDATE: OK, forgot to add this: If the clutch cable is shot, this could be the problem, though I doubt this. This would be the "rosiest scenario".

Sounds like you aren't a mechanic. Take it to a good shop and have them check it out. Plan on buying a new clutch and throw out bearing (have them check the rear main oil seal for any leaking as well, its easy to fix at the same time as the clutch replacement), and be pleasantly surprised if it only needs a cable.

If its just a throw-out bearing I would STILL replace the clutch while they have the car apart, have them look at the oil seal, etc.

i had the same thing happen. definitely the throwout bearing..replace the clutch while you're at it. have someone you trust do the work it will take some precise cutting if the TOB is frozen to front of the trans like mine was.
