Question My next mod is 4.10 Gears on an 01 GT. Questions? Install Myself? Who's are best?

I'm at the point where gears are my next modification. I have a 01 GT 4.6L - 2 valve. Looks like 4.10's are my best overall gear choice.

Is this a "do it yourself" jack stand job or better left to a garage? I'm not afraid to turn a wrench and have pulled axels and pumpkins before but never changed the gears themselves. I have the 01 Mustang Shop Manual to use as a reference.

Also, whose gears are best? I've been impressed with the Steeda stuff I've used and will go with them but it never hurts to ask the folks reading this forum. Thanks!

I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself if you have never done it before. You'd be better off having a shop do it, preferably one with experience.

Most will agree not to go with any other brand than FRPP. The best prices I have seen have been from GEFracing.com, speedconcepts.net, and buyfordmotorsport.com.

Go with Ford Motorsports. If you can change a clutch than you could possible do your own gears. They are not that hard to do but MUST be set up right. www.superstallions.com/tech/gears/gears.html is a great article. You will need air tools to do the job though.

Hey, i have a 98 GT and i did the install my self. I too installed 4.10 gears. Its about a 6 hour job. Everything worked out fine but i had a mechanic there who had done a gear swap before. He guided me through everything. I bought my 4.10s from Gefracing.com . They have really good prices and good service. Shoot me a PM if you decide to do the install yourself and i'll help you out. I hope this helps.

Thanks guys! Am I glad I asked for your help! I've decided to do the job myself and follow the directions carefully. That was a great Superstallions web article you sent along, complete with pictures. I have all the tools needed to install it myself except for the large frame contact hydraulic lift. It will be Jack Stands and a creeper for me. I printed the article and will order the Ford Racing gears. I'm still carrying 120 lbs of sand in my trunk (Wisconsin Ice & snow) so I can wait until May 1st when spring starts to arrive in Wisconsin. Thanks Again!

That is the spirit we all need around here. Go for it. I installed 3.73's in the wife's 5-speed '97 GT last fall in my garage using hand tools and some homemade pieces. I also installed new bearings and rebuilt the differential. Air tools would have made it nicer, but not absolutely needed. Do some research and think the project through before you start. For my project I pulled the whole rearend out of the car. Made my life easier since a bearing went bad and filled the whole thing with metal debris. After disassembling, I took the housing to a carwash and power washed everything. I found the two hardest parts were getting the pinion depth set (2 trips to the machine shop 30 miles away) and getting the pinion preload correct. I used a 2 foot breaker bar and a 3 foot piece of angle iron modified to bolt onto the pinion yoke. I highly recommend a longer breaker bar than the one I used. A lot of muscle power and a few beers got the job done though. Living down in central Illinois we did not get as much snow as you, so I took off the Blizzaks last weekend and put the Bridgestones back on. Let us know how it turns out.

Thumbs up Gear choice

FRPP or Richmond Gear's are a top choice. You can't go wrong
with Steeda's gear witch I belive are FRPP not 100% sure
though but,FACT is that you can never go wrong with Steeda
product though.
