A cold air inlet and tune would be a good first step.

I'm in the same boat as you. When I got my 04, it pretty much just had exhaust for performance improvement. Since these 4.6L 2v motors seem to lack the get-up and go below 3k rpm, It seems gears are the way to go first. I got a tuner so I could calibrate the gears when installed, and thats where I'm at right now.
Before I put the gears in and get into the heads and cams, Ive decided to invest in some subframe connectors to prevent and future body twist. If you don't have some sb's installed, I go there first. Otherwise GEARS. Lt's are next on my list. Ive seen gains of up to 30hp.

Gears, pulleys, cai, subframes, and a tuner.

i would go w/ gears for sure...then your best bet for hp gain would be some cams...when i switch mine out...i saw around 45hp gain...and it pulls now through out the rmp range.

you can get a motive gear set for 229.00 plus 80.00 for the rebuild kit...then comp cams will cost ya another 600.00...plus a new gaskets will run another 40.00 or so...then if you can do it all your self that would be it...but labor to put in gears 200.00 then the cam another 300.00

i went w/ the middle of the road comp cams...so i would not have to change anything else out...now if you go over the stock recommened lift for the springs...you will have to change them.

hen you say straight pipes does that mean no mufflers or no H/X. If no H/X then that is the first thing you need to fix.

Gears, tuner (sniper is the best) and longtubes would be the best first step.
