I want to put some Nitto Extreme Drag tires (275/40-17) on my 2000 Mustang GT and I want to put them on a 17 by 8inch rim. (17 by 9inch is recomended). Is this possible to do this with out adding too much extra tire wear or any odd stearing characteristics?

The widest tire you can get on that size rim is a 255 45 and i dont think Nitto makes a DR in that size youll probably have to go with the 9s if you want the 275 40s.

You can physically put them on there, but I wouldn't drive it, if you try to turn they're likely to slip the bead (come off the wheel), it can be done, but isn't safe.

I have 275/40 BFG's on the factory 17 x 8 wheel, 22 auto crosses and have had no trouble with the tire at all. They do not roll (as evidence by the white chalk I put on the tire before the races) and will not slip off the rim. They do 'pooch' out a bit but that is all.

they will work fine I ran them with no issues at all.
