The recharge will have nothing to do with the heater, but its pretty cheap to recharge freon, about $20 if you diy from a parts store. It sounds like your in-dash switch may be malfunctioning, the heater core could be bad, the blower motor, or a coolant leak would cause the lack of heat. Make sure you don't have a coolant leak first, that could cause serious problems, to check the charge of freon, use gauges. Is the system moving air through the cabin when switched on? How about when it starts to fade into what it shouldn't? If it works properly for a time and then cuts out I would think the switch is the most likely culprit.
