Question Octane?

Gang,

Dumb question (but that never stopped me from asking): What octane fuel do you recommend running in a '02 GT? I seem to get the best results from Exxon 89- but, should I be running Premium instead?

Thanks,

Bill (aka 'Stonespony')

The only thing a higher octane fuel does, is prevent against pinging. If you advance your timing, you want to run premium so you dont ping. Otherwise you get the best performance from the lowest possible octane before it pings.

Greatly appreciate your insight.

I've experimented with 87, 89, and 93 octane at different times. I've never detected an actual 'ping' from the engine, though? Where I've noticed the difference is mainly in throttle response- sluggish from 87 and 93; excellent from 89. My GT is bone-stock with the exception of a K&N FIPK I installed a few months ago.

P.S. Also had my first encounter with a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution last weekend. Wow! It's butt-ugly, but it sure is FAST!

I ran 89 with the occasional 93 tankful for the synthetic additives.

Be aware, the fuel injector cleaners you can buy, they recommend putting a quart with every tank. I wouldnt, these cleaners over time can deteriorate the lining of your fuel lines and gaskets.

Look in the back of your owners manual and run what it says, unless of course you advance your timing like the other guys said.

If it's running good on 89 and running like crap on everything else, then keep on using 89.

Don't bother using high octane unless you have some kind of forced induction, NOS or advance timing, Just make sure your getting your gas from a reputable gas station like chevron, shell, etc .

anyone here running the Steeda timing adjusters? If so how well does it work and did you have to switch to Premium?
