Default Transmission question/problem

I have a 98 Mustang GT 4.6L that is just above stock. Just a BBK Cold Air Intake and its tuned using Diablosport Predator, but the transmission has been giving me problems since I bought it.

Basically what it does is grinds going into gears. 1st to 2nd is tolerable, but 2nd to 3rd is a major problem. Sometimes it just wont go into gear until my rpms drop to around 2000 and at random times it will just drop out of 3rd into neutral.

Another interesting note is while I was playing around doing donuts is when I straitened up and took off I tried to throw it into second and it didnt work. It would only go into first and neutral, after stopping and calling a friend to come get me it randomly started working again. It happened again just punching it shifting out to 2nd.

My dad has a good bit of mechanical knowledge but hes not so great with transmissions, but he said it could either be the syncronizer or maybe the roll pin is sheered causing it to try and go between gears. I dont know if that makes any sense or not, but anyways I was wondering what some more experienced people think.

Sounds like a bad syncro or blocker to me.

Is 2nd to 3rd the only time you hear the grinding? No other gears? You may try to adjust the clutch before doing a rebuild on the tranny. The general rule of thumb is you need a 1/4" gap between the face of the throw out bearing and the fingers of the pressure plate when the pedal is all the way out at the rest position. You can check it by removing the metal clutch fork cover down on the bell housing. Over time, the disc wears whcih pushes the fingers outward and the cable itself stretches, causing what you are describing. If this all checks out, then a rebuild is in order.

PM sent......

Remember, it is almost impossible for anyone, myself included, to diagnose a problem over the internet without seeing the car. My advice is simply that, advice based on years of experience. I don't want you or anyone taking my word as gospel. I am trying to give some direction as to what I think may be happening.

+ 1 on the Syncro advice, without the synchronizer the forks that engage the driveshaft with the transmission have to be at the same speed almost, and if the car isnt at the right RPM for the gear it wont engage smoothly or sometimes at all without the Synchro's help
