Default engine swap on 98 gt

i finnally found an engine in my price range for my car. it got here friday. my question to you guys is what should i do to it before i put it back in the car? i know from experience that working under the hood of my car can be a pain. and from people doing modifications saying what a pain in the ass these cars are to work on.

i was thinking bbk shorty headers. for a number of reasons. 1. the manifolds seems to be one of the harder places to reach under the hood. 2. they are well within my price range. (under 500)

does anyone have any better ideas?

thanks.

well one suggestion would be to look into some used headers to save some money another would be bfore you bolt your engine in bolt on the wire right behind where the steering pump goes cause its kinda hard to get to im taking my engine out right now and have left that wire on til i get it unbolted and have room to get to it if your gonna do pi cams now would be a good time also there are a set in the classifieds that i was gonna get but found some local that are brand new for 100 bucks all you have to get is the cam bolts which shouldnt be much and you can pick up a used pi intake for around 100 too im switching to pi cams getting my heads ported and putting in mark 8 pistons plus some other stuff right now if you need any other suggestions just let me know im sure im forgetting something but thats all i can think of for now

i had wanted to do the pi heads but had always thought they were to expensive. ill have to look into that. and yeah that wire right behind the steering pump really is a pain. thanks for the great info. and is buying headers used common or a good idea?

well you dont have to have pi heads to put in pi cams they bolt right in and then you dont have to worry about all the extra stuff required to change to pi heads i would just port the ones you have my guy is gonna port my heads and put in pi valves and pretty much rebuild them with better parts for 390 and he does shipping so i could give you his info if you like the only good thing about the pi heads is that they raise your compression which you can get from switching over to mark 8 pistons that is what i am doing he is giving me the pistons rings bearings and all for only 60 bucks

oh sorry as far as the headers go used i havent gotten any personally but as long as they are in good shape i dont see the problem i have heard from alot of people that the shorties are just a waste of money though and that you would be better off waiting til you have the money for full length im saving for some bassani mid lenght only cause i already have a bassani x pipe and it will just bolt up

your guy will port heads for under 500? everytime i see ported heads up for sale its usually in the thousands. as for the mark VIII pistons. i dont really want to get into the bottom end just yet, but will they up the compression the same as the pi heads or more?

im starting to lean towards throwing the new engine in just ot get it running. and then rebuilding the original with the pi heads and headers and intake and such

the pistons bump it to the same as pi heads 10.1 and if you already have the heads off you just have to drop them in really so its not much more effort on your part and the ported heads are if he uses your heads but i know he also has a couple sets of ported pi heads for 700 a pair if you dont wanna use your npi heads
