This resource is compiled to aid in troubleshooting some common electrical issues involving lights and indicators. Use the first list to see how individual devices are wired up, and use the concordance to see what shares certain circuits to figure out what has power and what doesn't when troubleshooting. This is based on the diagrams from a 1998 Mustang's EVTM. I can not personally guarantee that the EVTM is 100% accurate, and it is possible that there are some typos in here. If there are mistakes, please let me know so we can get them fixed. I'm sure it could lead to a lot of confusion.

How to use this:

  1. Lookup what isn't working
  2. Start at the top of the list (battery)
  3. Go to the concordance and see what else uses that
  4. If other things powered by that are working, go on to next circuit component
  5. Repeat 3 and 4 until you find the first component that you can't confirm is good.
Important Note: Switches (denoted in {}) can go partially bad. These switches often have multiple connections. Confirming that some of the functions of a switch are working is not sufficient to guarantee that the switch is fully operational.

Example:
Cluster Illumination Lights won't come on. Going through the list...

Battery - Must be good. Head Lamps work.
[R] - Must be good. Head Lamps work.
~E.C. Fuse 50A~ - Must be good. Head Lamps work.
[BK/O] - Must be good. Head Lamps work.
~I.P. Fuse #5 15A~ - Must be good. Park Lamps work.
[T/W] - Must be good. Park Lamps work.
{Main Light Switch, Proceed on Park or Head, Dimmed by Knob} - Can't confirm.
[LB/R] - Only powers illumination bulbs, and none work. Nothing that runs off this is functioning, so no need to keep going.

You can either break out your multimeter and see if there's a voltage differential between LB/R and Ground, or you can just replace your Main Light Switch. This happened to me, and the switch was the culprit.

CONCORDANCE
Battery - Everything
Ground - Components are grounded to the frame and returned to the battery
{Main Light Switch} - Head Lamps (Low and High), High head Lamps cluster indication, Park Lights, Fog Lamp Switch (to trip relay), Turns on and Dims all listed instrument illumination Bulbs
{Multifunction Switch} - Head Lamps (Low and High), High Head Lamps cluster indicator, Turning and Hazard Lights, Brake Lights, Fog Lamp Switch (to trip relay)
{Electronic Flasher} - Makes stuff flash. Fed by [P/O] and [R/W]. Powers Front Side Lights during Hazard and Turn, Cluster Turn/Hazard Indicator, and Rear Park/Stop/Turn Lamps during Hazard and Turn
{Brake Petal Position Sensor} - Between LG/R and R/LG (difference?). Toggles on and off High Mount Brake Lights and Rear Park/Stop/Turn Lights when Braking.
~I.P. Fuse #1 15A ~ - Between [GY/Y] and [P/O]. Protects Electronic Flasher and Backup Lamps
~I.P. Fuse #5 15A ~ - Between [BK/O] and [T/W]. Protects Park Lamps and all listed Instrument Illumination Bulbs.
~I.P. Fuse #9 15A ~ - From [BK/O] to both [LG/R] and [R/W]. Protects High Mount Brake Lights and Rear Park/Stop/Turn Lights when Braking and Electronic Flasher (See Electronic Flasher)
~I.P. Fuse #13 10A ~ - Between [LB/R] and [LB/R]. Protects Instrument Illumination Bulbs
~I.P. Fuse #16 20A ~ - Between [BK/O] and [DB/O]. Protects High Beams during Flash to Pass
[R] - Everything. Connects battery to Engine Compartment Fuse Box
[BK] - This is what all of the grounds are labeled. Almost all of these components have their own ground cables and they're all black. Don't assume your ground cable is good because another component listed on here has a good ground.
[BK/O] - Feeds Main Light Switch. Powers Head Lamps (Low, Steady On, and Flash to Pass), High Head Lamps cluster indicator, High Mount Stop Lights/Luggage Compartment Lamp, Electronic Flasher, Park Lights, Brake Lights, Fog Lamp Switch (the one that trips the relay, not power to the actual lights), All listed instrument Illumination Bulbs
[R/Y] - Feeds Multifunction Switch from Main Light Switch. Powers Head Lamps in Low Lamps and on High when in Steady On (not in flash to pass), High Cluster Indicator when in Steady On, and Fog Lamp Switch (to trip relay).
[R/BK] - Feeds Low Lamps from Multifunction Switch and Fog Lamp Switch (to trip relay)
[LG/BK] - Feeds High Lamps from Multifunction Switch for both Steady On and Flash to Pass) and High Cluster Indicator when in Steady On. Goes straight to lights and splits onto [GY/W] for indicator feed.
[GY/W] - Feeds High Beam Cluster Indicator from [LG/BK]
[DB/O] - Feeds High Beams from I.P. Fuse #16 during Flash to Pass.
[LG/R] - Comes from I.P. Fuse #9, through, the Brake Petal Position Sensor. Powers High Mount Brake Lights and Rear Park/Stop/Turn Lights when Braking.
[R/LG] - Comes from Brake Petal Position Sensor. Powers High Mount Brake Lights and Rear Park/Stop/Turn Lights when Braking.
[BK/PK] - Apparently there are two of these. One is between the Backup Sensor and the Backup Lamps and just powers the Backup Lamps. The other is supposedly between [B/LG] and the High Mount Stop/Luggage Compartment Lamp Assembly. These are not the same cable.
[Y] - There are two of these. One is between an 40A engine compartment fuse and the ignition switch, powering the electronic flasher and the backup lamps. Another is between the fog lamp switch and the relay it triggers.
[GY/Y] - Between Ignition Switch and I.P. Fuse #1. Powers electronic flasher and backup lamps
[LB/BK] - Between 20A fuse in Engine Compartment and Fog Lamp Relay. Powers Fog Lamps when Relay is tripped.
[P/O] - From I.P. Fuse #1. Powers electronic flasher and Backup Lamps
[R/W] - Between I.P. Fuse #13 and Electronic Flasher (see Electronic Flasher)
[T/W] - Between I.P. Fuse #5 and Main Light Switch. Powers Park Lamps and all listed Instrument Illumination Bulbs.
[BR] - Between Main Light Switch and Park Lamps. Only powers Park Lamps.
[LB] - Between Electronic Flasher and Multifunction Switch. Powers Front Side Lights while turning (not on hazard) and Turn Cluster Indicators while turning (again, not on hazard) and powers Rear Park/Stop/Turn Lamps when turning (not on hazard)
[W/LB] - From Multifunction Switch to Lights. Powers Front Right Side Lights while Turning or on Hazard.
[W/R] - Between Electronic Flasher and Multifunction Switch. Powers Front Side Lamps and Rear Park/Stop/Turn Lamps during Hazard (not turning) and powers Cluster Turning/Hazard Indicators.
[O/LB] - Between Multifunction Switch and Right Rear Park/Stop/Turn Lamps. Powers Lamps when Braking, Turning, or Hazard.
[LG/O] - Between Multifunction Switch and Left Rear Park/Stop/Turn Lamps. Powers Lamps when Braking, Turning, or Hazard.
[T/O] - Between Fog Lamp Relay and Fog Lamps. Powers Fog Lamps.
[LB/R] - Between Main Light Switch and I.P. Fuse #13 and then continues from fuse to all the Indicator Illumination bulbs.

Hrm... can't seem to edit these posts. Not sure why.

Here's something I left off. The following circuit (which is listed above under front parking lights) also is what powers the rear parking lights. As listed above, they are illuminated when the Main Light Switch is set to Park or Head:

ALL Park Lights
Battery
[R]
~E.C. Fuse 50A~
[BK/O]
~I.P. Fuse #5 15A~
[T/W]
{Main Light Switch, Proceed on Park and Head}
[BR]
//Park Lamp//
[BK]
Ground

This same circuit powers the lights on the license plate and the rear sidemarker lamps.

As such, the comments about what the components listed here can affect include these lights

Oh I see... you can only edit your most recent post. That sucks.
