Question Details on 96gt 3G alternator swap to a 99-04 alternator

I've seen this swap done on many 96-98 GT's but I cant find any information on what I need to do it. Can someone please tell me a list of items I need to change (if any) to swap a 96gt 3G alternator to a 99-04 version.

I'm told it cant be done because the voltage regulator is different, but I know it's just a matter of swapping out the correct items.

I'd be greatful for any help.

Sorry, I don't have the answer to this question, but I was just wondering why you want to do this...

Be advised that the 99-04 alternators are experiencing a problem with diodes. When they START to fail (the alternator will still pass a simple load test) they can interfere with engine sensors like the Cam Sensor (in particular) and cause problems. Finding a used one would not be unusual, since people are pulling them off and replacing them due to this problem.

Both the 96-98 alternators and the 99-04's make 130 amps.

Places like Rock Auto sell new 96-98 alternators for about $120 plus shipping.

I actually plan to replace the big bulky 96-98 one with a small 99-04 chrome 160-200A one.
I'm going up in amps and the 99-04 ones just have a better show appearance. It's no different then replacing my 4.6L with a complete one from a 04 car. I just want to make sure I'm not missing any small details for the swap.
