Default Never change manual trans. oil??????

Am I misunderstanding something, or do you never have to change the oil in the manual transmission on a Mustang?? My owner's manual says something about it never needing to be serviced. Also, it appears to use the same fluid as the auto trans. What's up with all this?

Yes it does use ATF. It doesn't need to be changed, but I do change mine every year as a precaution. I use synthetic gear oil instead of ATF, shift it like I stole it, and have never damaged a T5....yet.

Do you know anything about Redline Lubricants? What brand do you use?

I have never used Redline Fluids before, but I know several people who have and they swear by them. I use Mobil 1 engine oil, and Castrol Syntec Gear Oil in my trans and rear axle. I think Scott (on this board) uses Redline.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic for the engine, tranny and rear end. A year or so ago I did my best to research which engine oil and filter to go with. I discovered that while Mobil 1 was not always rated #1 in all comparisions, it always ranked in the top three.

When it came to oil filters Mobil 1 also ranked very high, so did K & N, certain brands of Purolator and Ford's own filter. For best overall quality and value it seems Fords oil filter gets the nod hands down. I use the Ford filter on both my stangs and as a second choice I go with Mobil 1 (except for cost would be my #1 choice).

Surprisingly, there was a huge amount of negative comments about Fram filters and from comparision tests I found on the web, they rated among the worst.

I know. I've read and heard the same things about Fram. I used to buy those filters all the time until I heard all the bad stuff about them. I usually try to use Purolator. But, I will use Motorcraft on my Mustang. I'm due for my first oil change in 100 miles or so. Sounds like the Castrol Synth. or Mobil 1 in my tranny would work fine. Thanks guys.

If you add oil from the top where the shifter is there is no way of knowing how full it is. The best way to do this is to purchase a suck gun and add oil to the fill plug ( the top one ) until fluid starts to run out. This way you will not overfiill it. Frank
