Default Cam Install Issues

I Just Installed CC 262ah cams in my 2000 GT. The car runs ok for now until I get a tune, but my valve train seems loud for me. Is it supposed to be louder than stock with the after market cams? Also I did not turn the motor over and set the crank key way at the 12 o'clock position. This is what worries me. People tell me I should have put the motor in safe mode where all the pistons are below deck. When I installed the cams I just pulled my valve covers used the anderson chain tool and swaped cams. Should I go back and redo the cams by putting the motor in ''safe'' by putting the crank key way at 12 o'clock? Also the power seems to fall off in 3 and 4th gear! Is this because there is no tune?, Or do the cams need to be degreed?

I always suggest getting cams degreed, especially since the stock cam gears have been known to be up to 7 degrees off!!!!! As far as the noise, Comp Cams have the reputation of being noisy also. As far back as 2005, I've been hearing complaints about how noisy they are.

by not removing the front cover and replacing other components that are probably worn out and timing it correctly is really half a$$ing the job. most of the time the nylon guides your cam chains ride on are shot and should be replaced.

however it is pretty common to have excessive valvetrain noise for a short period of time after new cams are installed. it normally will go away pretty quick.

did you rotate the engine by hand to check for ptv issues before starting it?

Yea I turned the motor over by hand before starting it. There were no ptv noises! Also the motor only has 30xxx on it. So I seriously doubt there is any premature wear on the chain guides.

my chain guides where shot at 39000 its not uncommon. and all I run is amsoil in mine.

well give it some time see if it gets any better.

ok, i still dont understand how you can degree our engines? if i replace all the timing components, guides, chaines, etc. all except for the cams, cant a just line up the dots? obviously its a little more than just that, but how does a degree wheel and all that come into play?

By degreeing your cams in, you are ensuring that the valve events are happening exactly when they are supposed to. There are production tolerances that aren't quite perfect in every component, and degreeing the cams ensures that everything is right.

Like I said before, I've seen factory cam gears that were off by up to 7 degrees. That's enough to cause PTV contact when using a higher lift cam in the 4.6 worst case. Best case is that you constantly have idle and performance issues and can't fix them no matter what.
